The person who designed these buttons in excel just wanted to watch the world burn
It’s the USB stick of Excel
With a 50/50 chance, I have no chance.
50/50/90 rule. 50% chance, 90% chance to get it wrong
Doesn't help that google sheets does the opposite of excel.
Came here to say this. Excel I have memorized, I do it wrong on Google pretty much every time.
Chances of getting it right is 10x better when you do it mindlessly vs thinking about it
Agreed. Don’t think, just click
fuckin hell, they should just get rid of the 00's and just put "smoler" and "bigler"
EDIT: reached 420 upvotes, keep scrolling, nothing to upvote here 😎
I approve this idea
You click on the wrong one and now you gotta resize the damn columns too
ugh just kill me now
I feel like a cliche for saying this, but the Alt keyboard sequences are way easier to remember for those buttons.
Alt, H, 0 adds an extra decimal place
Alt, H, 9 removes a decimal place
You’re so right I use them all the time because it’s faster
🤣🤣 I thought it was just me
Wow, I totally thought it was a me problem.
alt+h+9 or alt+h+0 and you never need to sweat about this again
But which is which
This is really dumb but it bothers me when the number format says “Custom” and not “Accounting” so I usually jusf avoid these buttons all together 😂
Alt H 0 for more zeros
alt h 9 for nein zeros
I remember it by position. The right button moves your numbers right (decreases decimals). The left button moves your numbers left (increases decimals)
I’m commenting so I can easily come back to give you my free award
This is toooo acurate
The buttons make sense, but it takes 10 seconds of critical thought to figure which is which. With as much pressure as I am under while working on spreadsheets, I don't have 10 seconds to spare.
I just looked at what the icon looks like fully for the first time. The arrows are pointing from one to the other. Increase starts with one zero and goes to two while the other one is reverse of that. I think I might actually start clicking the right one first try now...
What you get is the number of zeros on the bottom of the button.
Anyone else just spam one of the buttons and see which direction it goes and then immediately spam the other one to get it look the way you want?
I was just thinking about how irritating it is a few days ago.
I have never felt such a personal attack
Should just be 0+ and 0- OR .0+ and .0-
Lol I have a good grip on this
how do u not understand the digit lol
Oh man. Every time 😂
What's wrong with accounting format?
Some financial reports have to be XX,XXX and not XX,XXX.xx so almost always you have to shorten it and almost always I pick the wrong direction.
When I get it right, I have already clicked the opposite button twice.
i agree.. fuck it up every time.
I don't get these confused, but ascending/descending is just lost on me.
Ascend = to go up. A - Z
Descend = to go down. Z - A
I just click on the first one my mouse reaches first. When it's wrong 90% of the time, I just click the other twice.
Oof this one got me.
Once you have made the mistake thousands of times the correct one will be burned into your brain forever. I don’t even think about it now.
I usually just Ctrl 1, tab into accounting and choose the number of decimal places. Saves me time in the long run since I always screw up these two options
The buttons should be like
> .00 and .0
That way you’d be able to tell which will give you more or fewer decimal places
They’re like the open doors/close doors buttons in the elevator
never paid attention to the icons before..... interesting!
It's like getting the year right on the first work week of January. It's an accomplishment in itself if you get it right the first time.
The weird thing is I’ve never tried to understand the icons before. I just click one, it doesn’t work, click the other one and move on.
Pro tip: pin the reduce decimal one (or the one you use most often) to your quick access tool bar
Or learn to ROUND(,2), noobs.
Not an accountant or a big excel user (sorry if that's against the rules) - am I missing something or would it not be crystal clear if they were designed [like this](https://i.imgur.com/MyTTZoF.png) and [this](https://i.imgur.com/kiZO408.png) instead (colors optional)? These buttons just move decimals up or down 1 place, right?
No. They increase/decrease the number of places shown.
It’s faster to guess and fix it then try to figure out the right way
I always get it wrong hahah
Haha do true
You and me both.
No matter how many times I use this I still get them mixed up all the fucking time
Totally, the graphic on the button doesn't make it cleasr if you're moving the decimal right or moving a zero right.
I prefer alt+h+9
Oh man! I just thought I was stupid! So glad I'm not the only one.
I just frantically click on both in random order without thinking anything until I see which one gives me the needed result on my screen
On Google sheets it is easier for some reason idk
I thought it was just me
Seriously - who tf designed this. It should say
0000 lotsa zero
0 not so much
Whichever arrow you click is what direction the characters move to
Just do the opposite of what you think would make sense. Works for me
Alt + H + 9 for roundup, Alt + H + 0 for rounddown. U r welcomed
Ha this rings true. Even after years. Seems the opposite of what should be correct.
Replace 1 with 4 for cash monetary.
Okay, this is getting personal now.
You get used to it after 20 years. 😆. The one on the right is what you hit after you press the “,” or “$” button to turn the number into a currency, but want no cents.
Is it weird that I don't have this issue?
Primarily for accountants and aspiring accountants to learn about and discuss their career choice. Advice and questions welcome.
