Well it’s not like literally the whole internet knows by now but ok.
Seriously. Including them is at least 80% a marketing stunt anyway - even if they wait for a big theater surprise to drive word of mouth and give it more box office legs, they’re *at least* going to heavily hint.
There’s zero chance Sony and Disney does not capitalize the holy grail in the trailers. It’s a multiverse movie and they’re gonna market that with the heroes not just the villains from other movies.
I don’t know why anyone actually thinks avoiding showing Tobey and Andrew would be an option. That’s the kind of marketing reveal that adds a whole new dimension of intrigue for the general audience.
If they're really not present in marketing, then they're absolutely just small cameos at the most.
Not true. Avengers literally used fake shots for marketing. They can do whatever they want in the trailers and still have Tobey and Andrew in the 2nd and 3rd acts as major supporting characters. Mysterio wasn't revealed as a villain until FFH released in theaters, he was marketed as a hero.
But everyone already knows about it.
Not everyone. Fans are in a bubble. There's plenty of people, general audiences, who don't see this chatter.
If they’re going to show Doc Ock in his Spider-Man 2 costume, that’s as much of a giveaway as possible that the other Spider-Men are in it. Might as well capitalize on that and show them in the trailer. Maybe not the teaser but definitely for one of the theatrical trailers.
Technically just because Doc Ock from SM2 is in doesn't mean that Toby Maguire's Spider-man has to be too.
Theaters have been struggling through the pandemic and they don’t want to show the thing that would guarantee this movie makes a billion dollars? I call BS.
This. After this pandemic we really need some kind of Endgame level event movie to drum up that kind of excitement again and bring normality back to theaters. Phase 4 doesn’t even have an Avengers movie on the slate anytime soon, but Tobey/Andrew would do it. Would be foolish not to market them.
Let’s say HYPOTHETICALLY that Tobey and Andrew aren’t in it or that we don’t know they’re in it. Based on what we have confirmed alone from Alfred Molina it just wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever to have the villains returning as the versions we previously saw and NOT have them in it. It would be such a wasted opportunity to include their villains but not their Spider-Men.
I believe the Spider-Men are in it…but I’m honestly unsure how true what Molina said was. I’m not denying that’s how he’s been told to play it, as 2004’s Ock, but I’m not exactly sure how or why it would be like that. And mainly that I don’t think fans would like it.
“but everybody already knows” NO, all us NERDS know. general audiences, which are the majority of the audience, don’t know shit. it makes sense to keep denying.
Yeah but the opposite side of that logic is that the general audience gets less excited for those surprises anyway. Kind of a wash if you ask me.
Teaser/trailer 1 - shows Tobey and Andrew at the end with maybe Dafoe's Goblin laugh.
Official trailer 1 or 2 - shows us all the villains.
"No one‘s ever really gone"
Andrew Garfield wants to talk about his involvement so bad. You can tell that he lighted up, as soon as he got asked that question. If he would have no involvement whatsoever, he would just straight out say "no", but yet he's talking stuff like "i never got a call, but you know", "no idea what they are doing, but who knows".
This makes me so happy to read, he got shafted so hard in the TASM series so I really hope he had a great experience with this one
I am a firm believer that they are being revealed in the trailer
Same here, I just thought I'd share what a fairly credible scooper said. :)
Yeah no, I doubt it. I'm sure that any fan knows they're in the movie or at least has heard about the rumors. Tobey and Andrew appearing in the trailer will be like Spider-Man in the Civil War trailer except 10x bigger. The internet will explode, the movie will trend everywhere and it's gonna garner hundreds of millions of views across all media.
Ironic they want to keep this hype machine a surprise but reveal everything else in their other trailers no problem. God damnit Sony.
Also on a side note: *tick tock* Daniel, where's that Venom trailer at tho?
*Far From Home* made a billion dollars. There’s no NEED to show them in the trailers to ensure the movie’s success. It’s a surprise that will just have more people rushing to theaters once the film actually drops.
...That being said, Sony is known for spoiling their entire movies in trailers, so I guess it depends who’s cutting it. I’m expecting it to be implied heavily but those two won’t actually be shown. We’ll probably see the Six, though.
I think that was partially due to it being right on the heels of endgame. Spider-Man homecoming only grossed $880M and that movie is far superior to FFH
There’s no way Sony doesn’t reveal it. The amount of buzz and hype would be insane. Keep a few appearances out like Cox, Dunst, and maybe a villain or two. But Tobey and Andrew will be heavily marketed if they’re in the movie.
Nah fam this is Sony we talkin about. MFs put the last scene of the movie in the ASM2 trailer and the Venom trailer.
Haha no way, Sony will market the shit out of having three Spider-Men in the same movie.
“Are you in Spider-Man No Way Home?”
*Andrew Garfield Sweats Intensely*
Alfred Molina didn't get that memo.
Skyler Shuler would definitely know this as a member of Sony's marketing team. Can you tell us when the first trailer will drop next, Skyler?
That reads more like informed speculation to me, kinda. There's obviously a gag order in place until the proper moment, but I seriously doubt that casuals aren't going to find out that Tobey and Andrew are in this on opening night. We haven't even got an official cast list from Marvel Studios on this thing.
The thing is that most of the villains in this movie are going to be Multiverse-related, and they can't not show them. Do people really think that Sony is not going to reveal two of their biggest hooks for this movie when they spoiled most of *Spider-Man: Homecoming* with their second trailer?
I agree with what you’re saying for the most part, but to play devil’s advocate I was pretty certain they were in back in December and I really didn’t expect to be here in May way after filming has wrapped with no photographic evidence or confirmation from a trade that they’re involved.
It’s such a weird contrast to the Civil War days, where every major actor was well known much prior to marketing. Like even before the first trailer came out (with no Spidey, because they were ironing out negotiations with Sony) the Russos were quite open about Tom Holland being in it and having filmed his scenes during interviews whenever they were asked. Sure they saved the money shot for the second trailer, but it wasn’t treated like internet gossip like they’re trying to make it seem here.
Even though this is the worst kept secret in Marvel right now and we know enough to to make them being in it inevitable, Sony/Marvel have actually done a phenomenal job in terms of having nobody spotted on set. And then the gag orders and actors lying profusely. All that effort for what? To just control the timing and spoil it themselves in a couple months? Like I said devils advocate because Andrew/Tobey are a massive marketing draw, but I can still imagine Feige sitting in his office just thinking “Wow, we’ve outdone ourselves.” Then pleading to Sony and the actors like “Guys, we could actually pull this off. This is your 2 billion dollar portals moment. I beg you, please don’t spoil it. ” And then proceed to market in a way that shows off the villains and heavily suggests Tobey and Andrew are in without giving it away. Then just like with Endgame, maybe like 1-2 weeks after the movie is out they just bombard people with tv spots of the three Spider-Men. I think this could honestly be the strategy but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I’m wrong either lol
Sorry Skyler, I have extreme doubts about that. From everything we know about this movie, this is 100% a Spider-Verse movie. Almost every villain is from a previous movie/universe, their love interests are in it, and Tobey and Andrew supposedly enter the film at the second act and stay around for the whole thing if that leak is to be believed. They would have to pull some Endgame level marketing tricks to hide it, which would be pointless since everyone and their grandmother knows Tobey and Andrew are most likely coming back. A normal MCU Spider-Man film marketing campaign would bring in less hype than a Spider-Verse one, end of story.
Tobey and Andrew will be front and center in every single piece of marketing, mark my words.
The guy who leaked out a bunch of plot details and turned out to be mostly correct said they did promo shots and stuff for them. + Daniel RPK saying they didn’t want to give a first look until they had Tobey. There’s absolutely no way in hell they aren’t in the marketing.
The hype they would generate would be to big to not put them in the trailers
I can't imagine this level of restraint.
Even films without giant secrets of this magnitude can't keep big spoilers out of the trailers.
Would love a One-Shot of Feige dressed as Kraven with a sniper rifle, hunting Maguire and Garfield in hopes that they don't "leak" anything,
a bit unrelated but I think it would be so cool if the sinister six had their own "avengers assemble" moment with the pan around camera except they're all staring at the three different spider-men, as opposed to the avengers staring up at the chitauri.
Que the Funko and Lego leak...
Finally a cheap way to get the Raimi Spidey minifig!
The marketing for this film is going to be VERY interesting. The question of whether or not they'll include Tobey and Andrew is the biggest one for sure (assuming they are in the movie, of course).
The way I see it, we really don't know what the overall plot is going to be like as of now. If it's as heavily involved with the multiverse as some are assuming, I'd imagine we'd see some aspects of that in the trailer.
When it comes to the villains, we've got a lot going on. We know Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx are returning to play their respected characters for sure, but no confirmation of who the "big bad" is. This leads me to wonder how they will market the PLOT of the movie. If it is in fact involved with the multiverse, maybe the trailers will show off the VILLIANS of the other Spider-Man franchises, without revealing that Tobey and Andrew are in the film (though dropping hints is likely).
This reminds me of the marketing for "Avengers: Endgame." In the trailers they hinted at several plot points like Tony possibly dying in space and the Avengers trying to snap their own fingers, but never made it very clear the direction the film was going and how it was going to get there. I think Spider-Man: No Way Home could be similar to this where the trailers will focus on marketing the plot (multiverse and non multiverse) and save the BIG REVEAL (Tobey and Andrew) for the in-theater experience. After a couple weeks, then maybe will we see Tobey and Andrew in the marketing, just like what they did with the Endgame reveals like Cap wielding Mjolnir and the "Avengers Assemble" scene.
These are just my thoughts, what do you think?
Normally Sony shows a bit too much in their trailers. But if Marvel Studios has more control over the film they could go Endgame route. Yeah we know they’re in it but it’ll hit way different to see it in theaters.
They honestly didn’t spoil too much from the Spider-Man MCU films.
What would be the profit motive
It's almost impossible that the shock twist of "characters appear in movie" (which most people will likely be either confused by, or not see the significance of, at first until the movie explains it) would generate so much word-of-mouth buzz as to bring in more viewers than just... putting them in the trailer.
At most I can see them keeping Tobey and Garfield out of the teaser, so as to keep them as fuel for the hype train in the first or second (proper) trailer.
Honestly, why not? Sony has never been able to market a Spider-Man movie properly without showing either big plot points or characters, ever since 2002.
We fans already know they're in the movie, save some surprises for the mainstream audience aka the audience that actually makes these movies successful.
This prevents Sony from over marketing their presence if they're not main characters.
Obviously they are though? Let’s look at the facts. Movies haven’t had a big IT factor since Endgame. Not on that level. Then covid hit the same year as Endgame. Now you’ve got Andrew returning whose got his own fan base, who had his own duo of Spider-Man movies that never got a send off that people have wanted to see. THEN to make things even better you’ve got the GOAT Spider-Man with Tobey returning who has legit legions of fans like myself who grew up with him and have been waiting for his return since 2007. Let’s just not show that and expect word of mouth to travel for a movie that is the third iteration of Tom’s Spidey and is after covid. That’ll really get the masses to come! I like this Skyler guy but he’s been wrong on a few things and I’m certain his ‘good chance’ that they’re not gonna be in marketing is A-O wrong!
If they show off Electro and Doc Ock in the trailers I think we can take a hint that they’ll be in the film
Unless he has inside information about this, I think he's mistaken based off of Sony's marketing tactics. (Never forget how they showed the post-credit scene of TASM1 in the fucking trailer lmao) They're just waiting to reveal it in the trailer or something to that effect. Imagine what an anti-climax it would be, all this hype and they just plainly announce they're in the movie. Booooorrrriiiiing
When should we expect a teaser trailer anyway?
IIRC Far From Home got its first one about 6 months before the movie was due to come out.
June. In time for F9 and Black Widow
Yeah no. Maybe if Marvel Studios was in charge of marketing, but Sony would never. Sony always shows everything in the trailers.
I could believe them not showing in trailers until a week after release. Spider-Man/MCU is guaranteed bank anyway the only real modifiers would be notoriety of the character and it's already about as big it gets and then word of mouth on quality. That being revealed in the movies for the first time officially would be a huge moment even if we already know it.
Also for every comment saying everyone knows it anyway then why are there 10 posts of rumors and speculation about it here everyday. Until 100% official most people have doubts
I mean if they are in it I guarantee they will be in the trailer. Its marketing gold. unless its a small cameo then I can see them keeping it secret
Not much of a marketing knower, but wouldn’t showing the other Spider-Men help to make more people interested in the movie, especially the general audience?
I seriously doubt that they aren’t present even in the first trailer, it can be their best selling point.
Its pretty easy to think they'll be edited out of any potential shots from the trailer they could be in; especially if we get the (very likely) Spidey vs the sinister six shot we all expect.
It's not like we haven't been lied to by MCU trailers before
Just remember the Ralph Bohner incident of 2021. Don’t get your hopes up folks.
Every comment that mentions Doc Ock has me chuckling. All the constant boner jokes have broken my brain.
Kinda funny...he explained that werewolf was a game where you have to convince people that you're not the werewolf. If you're not the werewolf...why would you have to "convince" everyone else? I don't buy it. Sounds like a Sony/Marvel Studios game of NDA to me...
Isn't the the BH6 guy? Should we really take their scoops seriously?
Yes because they're VERY rarely wrong, and we don't even know if the BH6 thing was wrong yet.
It's stupid because the cats already out the bag... it's done... having everyone pretend at this point is just stupid and so much pointless work... especially when you might as well use it in marketing at this point and capitalise off it
How the hell they gonna do that when everybody knows already lol
If they are in this movie, then they will do something at some point to promote it. No way they wouldn’t. If they aren’t, then it muggy just be the villains of the multiverse. I’ve seen what happens with situations like Wandavision where people assumed certain things to happen then snapped when it didn’t. We honestly should just relax about this whole “are they in it” with Spider-Man and wait a bit and not get our hopes up. There hasn’t been really any real proof they are in it yet other than “he said, she said”. So until we see some real proof, I think we should hold back our expectations.
Thank god :,), and haha Sony already screwed up as we all already know!
I love andrew i want him
They didn’t just bring back one villain from a previous spidey franchise. Like that wasn’t enough they went back and casted two non-original villains as the exact same role. At this point, it has me questions “why” with the only logical explanation that both the protagonists from respective universes have to be there with them. They could have easily recast and not to mention use completely different villains, but chose not to. Either they’re really good actors (which they are, and keep lying in interviews) or this is some absurd reasoning and casting decisions by Sony and Marvel over here. I will be so confused and dumbfounded if they’re not in the movie. But I will still be there on opening day :). Just a little sad.
I hope this is the case and Sony, for once in their life, actually tries to keep things out of their trailers. All you have to do is show some of the other villains that are showing up, and hint that there's other Spider-Men without showing Tobey, Andrew or any of their costumes. Leave that to an experience in the theaters.
If COVID's under control, this could be the first $1bn movie, and hinting at this reveal in the trailers would be a way to get people to the theaters...
**EXT. NEW YORK CITY ROOFTOP - NIGHT**
Peter stands alone atop muddied rooftop. His mask is chafed and damaged. He breathes heavily, and appears injured.
You know, we're something of a Sinister Six ourselves.
Peter, confused, readies himself for battle nonetheless.
**TWO SILHOUETTED MEN** appear behind Peter.
UNKNOWN MAN (O. S.)
At this point I don’t even know, this could just be a crazy way of marketing, spideys or not I’m watching this movie because of the rumors
Wait is this guy reliable or? I don’t really know all the scoopers
So much of surprise, everybody knows their involvement
This guy isn’t credible when it comes to MARVEL STUDIOS rumours, only when it comes to non-MS news
How is he with Sony? Because this would be a Sony marketing choice.
We all know how this goes anyway. Its a “secret”. Its stays a secret and then the moment the movie is in theatre’s the next day they’ll already release a new TV spot spoiling the entire suprise.
