This person forgot the second thing the US is #1 in: Incarceration.
Also much of the global south living exactly how American corporations and politicians want them to live. Gotta love imperialism!
I’ve seen this pretty often the last few weeks. With so many attacks on America’s healthcare system, it seems people have come up with “but we spend our money protecting the whole world instead” as a comeback.
Imagine defending your country’s flaws this hard by spreading nonsense propaganda instead of advocating for meaningful change.
Imagine thinking the government fucks up its own people, just to be able to police the world, and accepting that as a rational phenomenon.
Wow! A completely new level of American Vampire truth-telling (facts that don't survive when exposed for what they are.)
Let's start with the simple one and see how many simpletons grasp the truth.
In the entire lifespan of NATO, only one country has ever invoked Article 15. That country was the US and all NATO members met their obligations.
That there wonderful and hugely overstated $778 billion budget has some interesting components to help make that number look so astounding when compared to the rest of the world. So let's remove some of the hidden stuff.
Defense Budget $778 Billion
Homeland Security (in the defense budget) -$50 billion
New number: $728 Billion
Dept of Veterans Affairs (in the defense budget) - $125 billion
New number: $623 Billion
State Department (in the defense budget) -$44 billion
New number: $579 Billion
Department of Energy (in the defense budget) -$20 billion
New number: $559 Billion
Department of Justice (in the defense budget) -$9.8 billion
New number: $549.2 Billion
Nuclear Modernization (in the defense budget) -$29 billion
New number: $529.2 Billion
New Space Program (in the defense budget) -$18 billion
New number: $531.2 Billion
US Cyberspace protection (in the defense budget) - $10 billion
New number: $521.2 Billion
Presidential Helicopters (in the defense budget) -$1 billion
New Number $520.2 Billion
Across the board pay increase (in the defense budget) $8 billion
New Number: $513 Billion
None of this includes shit like F-22 fighters manufactured and mothballed to satisfy some Senator, the Trump wall and the costs of maintaining hundreds of pork-barrel bases no longer needed That alone would shave easily another $36 billion off the budget.
The third Seawolf will eventually cost taxpayers $ 2.4 billion
Then we have such wonderful "Defence" line items like:
$141,000,000 for National Guard Drug support,
$171,000,000 for US base repairs,
$1.8billion for health and disease research,
$41,167,000 for the Starbase Youth Program,
$1,107,177,000 for 19 earmarks for the Army Corps of Engineers (work on the Mississippi),
$119.1 million for aquatic plant control,
$16,325,000 for aquatic nuisance control research,
$11,400,000 for fish passage and fish screens
$290,000,000 for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program
$63,642,000 for the Port Security Grant Program
$300,000,000 for Coast Guard operations,
$225,000,000 million for medical research projects,
$15,000,000 for electric vehicle research,
$15,000,000 million to study the energy created by the Aurora Borealis
$183,300,000 was designated for projects at specific universities, institutes and centers for which the Defense Department has neither requested funding nor identified a need.
So, in actual fact, the US ends up somewhere south of 2.4% of GDP when the hidden shit is removed. Just slightly ahead of some and slightly behind some others.
The US has bases in some European countries because of an agreement made in WW2 that included the "awarding" of land to build bases on. In the case of Germany, it was part of the surrender agreement. It was NOT at Germany's request. He also seems to be oblivious as to why there are no US military bases in France. That's because DeGaulle threw them and their nukes out in the '60s.
Those German bases are also a lifeline for wounded American soldiers caught in an illegal war. Without Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a huge number of those wounded soldiers wouldn't have made it home.
In addition, the central support for Iraq and Afghanistan is run out of bases in Germany. No bases, the US would have a 7,000KM trip for basically everything including air support.
A huge number of the German bases are also NATO bases with a section cordoned off and given an American name or are now used to house State Department employees. In addition, Germany paid either the full amount or half the costs to build these bases and pay to maintain them.
Feel free to pull out of the UK, Germany, Italy and Canada and see if the USA is ever welcomed back.
Don't forget the bases in Japan and all the trouble US troops have caused over there.
In Brazil, we really wanted to live how we wanted. But USA keeps interfering in our democracy and choosing presidents for us.
Democracy is the rule of democrats
#1 at wasting vast amounts of money on Military that is not needed and never will be.
wouldn´t say that, but the us shouldn´t spend hard, but smart.
Many of this Spendings arn´t necessary and didn´t give the us an advantage after all.
i didn´t have the link on hand, but there was a study in this matter (nobody cared about it) that you could spend ONE THIRD lower and would have the same strategic Firepower on hand.
Apending on US defence budjet is less about making the world safer, but more about profit making for the massive weapon industry.
Pretty sure the entire world aside from Israel disagrees mate.
The lowest tax band in the UK is actually 0%, paid by everyone on their first £12,570.
I love how Americans think they know how tax works in the UK, when they don’t. It’s a staggered tax system, if you earn £50,000 ($68,452.50) a year; this is how you will be taxed:
£12,500 ($17,113.13) - 0% Tax
£37,500 ($51,339.38) - 20% Tax
Take home pay: £37,662 ($51,561.16). This total also includes NI.
If you earn £12,500 a year or less, you don’t pay tax at all. Everyone is entitled to that earn that amount of money tax free.
Edit: added GBP to USD exchange rate
Edit 2: corrected later tax band as commenter correctly let me know mine was slightly incorrect, which was much appreciated.
If I remember rightly (because I can’t find the source just yet) it’s something like the average US citizen pays 27% of their annual income into tax and in the U.K. it’s 32%.
Considering the how much better the welfare and healthcare are in the U.K. I think it’s a good deal
To be fair, they're #1 in many areas such as [incarceration rates, obesity, car thefts, reported rapes, etc, etc](https://www.businessinsider.com/20-shameful-categories-america-leads-world-2011-7?r=US&IR=T#there-are-more-reported-rapes-in-the-united-states-each-year-than-anywhere-else-in-the-world-7)
I love bragging how much we spend on weapons. Followed by how little we spend on education. If that doesn't perfectly explain the shit show that is the USA I don't know what does.
*We are literally prioritizing destruction and military over health, safety, and concern for our own citizens*
Totally should brag about that.
Do they know your first 12k-ish in the UK isn’t taxed and if you pay 40% tax it’s not 40% on everything its only on what’s over that tax bracket.
so say you earn 50k and the tax is 40% when you hit 45k
12k isn’t taxed
33k is taxed at 20%
that puts you at 45k. the remaining 5k is taxed at 40%
these are rough figures
Methinks that when the world will have reached a decent state we will witness it also in very small military spendings.
But what do I know ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
To me it read like the start of a critique, but no he was trying to brag, lol.
Link to the video?
20-40% in Canada? It’s 5% tax here in Alberta
I think that person is talking about income tax but you’re talking about sales tax
Spent all that money on the military and still no healthcare or housing.
being #1 in military isn’t the flex. that Americans believe it is
well they are #1 in two things. Military and school shootings
Americans want to move to Canada, until they realize they have to report their taxes to the US. (Technically, they’ll report to Canada, and then Canada reports it to the US.) Lol, we can’t escape good ‘ol Uncle Sam.
\#1 in gun violence, and amount of violent insurrections taken place this year
"gets to live how they want" lmao
That spending is to force the other 95 % to live acording to the usa interests
Shit Americans Say: we can't make it up.
