Main idea of this project was making an airsoft gun, which distantly resembles Desert Tech MDR rifle. This is not an exact replica, a lot of changes were made to make the rifle a bit more ergonomic, easy to assemble and reliable as an airsoft gun.
This gun features a strong, durable and easy-to-assemble 3D-printed plastic gearbox. The gearbox is compatible with usual airsoft parts for version 3 gearbox.
Open source, you may print one for yourself =) Longest part is about 235 mm, but i think it may fit diagonally on 200\*200 heat bed.
Bull-pup design, 455mm inner barrel, M-style mags. 3D-printed gearbox shell with internals from v3 gearbox.

My question is, why not use an already assembled gearbox? I read that you have had no problems with a 3D printed one, but why not be safe than sorry?
Before I read the title, I legitimately though that DTA was making their own airsoft guns. Needless to say, this looks fantastic! If I had my own printer, I’d definitely be making one for myself in FDE. The fact that you’re posting the files for others to use is pretty damn cool, too
Thank you! I've waited for MDR, but then I've decided to do my own :)
It will be interesting to see how long the 3D printed gearbox shell lasts. I like the design, one of the only bullpups that look good
Previous project shot about 15k without traces of wear and still works. I've also tested this box with long dry bursts (several hundreds of dry shots with m140 spring) and box is ok.
Oh boi here I go printing again.
Good luck! I'll be happy to receive feedback!
reminds me of finka's spear 308 from siege
I love it!
Super interesting, might try it.
I'll be happy to receive feedback =)
I might have to put an f2 in one ;)
That's what I'm thinking too :0
This, this is what I want to see more of.
OD Green? Check.
**3D printed AEG?** Check.
Looks sexy? Check.
You my good Sir(ette) are the best thing related to airsoft I've seen in a long while!
Thank you! Happy to read =)
This is amazing! Looks a lot more like a "real" product than the previous design. Is it also full auto only?
Thank you! As usual, full auto only. But I've seen my previous aeg redesigned with heavy body change, semiauto, shot counter and other features :)
Open source dude. You should've sold this for a profit. You're too generous.
Yes, I'am =) Just want our hobby to be more interesting.
Cool design, I'm always a fan of non-M4 builds and anything Bullpup.
Question: how durable is it? I know most guns can't take a beating anyways, plenty of guns snap if you trip and land on them, but would you say it can be sturdy? Will it hold up to aggressive twisting in the hand? Pumping against tables, dropping to the dirt ground at awkward angles?
I'm not saying I expect to be able to bludgeon another player with it, but will the handle snap off if I twist the wrong way to hard?
Thank you! It could be an idea for a cool video, I have a lot of parts left, so I may try to assemble body without internal parts and do some stress-tesing. Hit it against tree, drop from some height, maybe even bludgeon somebody unexpectedly ;)
Also the handle is interchangeable with any ar15 aeg handle, so you may set up your favorite unsnappable option =)
This is epic, and you are epic too!
Thank you! I hope, this will add more cool guns to our hobby =)
That's fuckin baller
This is very impressive and now it's making wonder how would you make 3d print files? I'm incredibly ignorant when it comes with 3D printers I have zero experience with one and I don't know anyone who owns one. But I'm wondering if I can get this part for my Sig 552-1 Commando.
[https://www.evike.com/products/41191/](https://www.evike.com/products/41191/) As you can see its the folding stock connecter and mine broke and I can't find a replacement for it online so I'm thinking I can get a file and have a online service or something print one out for me.
I usually draw parts in Solidworks. You may draw almost anything technical there and then print it.
Thats cool asf
Is it possible to use a normal gearbox with this?
Very nice! How long did it take to print?
I'm not sure. I've printed about 7 different versions, before I was satisfied. I think, this AEG could be printed in 2-3 weeks.
How much was the total cost for all of this?
Cost for developing and cost for producing are really different. I think, if you have 3D printer and a lot of spare time, you may print and assemble one for 50$ (maybe less) + cost of airsoft part. But I've made 7 of them to polish the construction.
Damn! I really want an MDR but no ones made one yet. Gotta get a 3D printer now XD
Silverback is making one, or so they claim. Was supposed to release in 2019 but it's been pushed back again and again, so who knows if it'll ever see the light of day.
Would this accept a HPA engine for V3 gearboxes?
If it is inserted into upper part of regular gearbox - I think it fill fit. If you'll try, plese, tell me about success or fail - I think, it would be a good chapter to assembly instructions.
This made me think of the Kel-Tec RDBs. You should make that one as well!
It's kind of like a modern looking "hunting rifle". Really cool looking.
I've thought about RDB-C - it could be the strangest airsoft rifle.
Dang son you beat me to the dream, amazing work man. Can’t wait to print one
Good luck! Please, share your experience when you'll done. I really appreciate a good advise how to make rifle or assembly instructions better!
Man I wish I had a printer or a way to get one, I’ve wanted an mdr for so long!
You can get killer printers for $150-300 these days
this looks really cool. Get me the initiative to get my 3D printer fixed.
Good luck with fixing your printer!
Is it 3D printed gears?
No, it uses standard airsoft gears, piston, cylinder e.t.c. Only gearbox shell and hop-up body is printed. I'm experimenting with printing some of the internals, but not happy with results yet.
Dang reminds me a bit of Ngsw
Have to look on it closely. The idea is good.
Masada handguard, tavor ass..
Yes, everything together and a bit of design =)
I don't know if it was already asked but, is there a .308 version?
Would mae a the perfect dmr.
No, I didn't bother. You may remake one, it will be a good contribution to the project!
Is this in pla? And Would this be able to be printed on an ender 3?
I've printed it in ABS. It may fit Ender 3, if you'll place couple of parts diagonally on bed.
Really cool, but don't be surprised if something like this gets targeted by the ATF eventually.
Yes, or maybe airsoft manufacturers will ask to prohibit it =)
That looks really good, you should try to make a halo dmr.
Thank you! I'm a bit tired of bullpups for now and think about small PDW now.
Do the parts fit on an ender 3?
It may fit Ender 3, if you'll place couple of parts diagonally on bed.
Well now I'm jealous lol. I'm waiting on the Silverback MDR to release, so I'll just have to sit and wish I was you until then. XD
Yes, lucky me with MDR. I'm going to big airsoft LARP this year, so having a really unique gun is a good part of the character ;)
This is like the Holy Grail for Airsoft makers and modders. Build a gun... any gun... of your choice. You just need a large 3D printer and some know-how. So very good.
Yes, I'm waiting for development conveyor-based printers. Than I'll be able to print even longest parts as one!
Is the shorter upper included in the zip file? Looks amazing, really interested in the shorter version one. I assume assembly is almost fully identical to the regular length one? Keep up the amazing work
Only difference is installing another handguard and barrel end. But I'm working on these parts now - want to hide screw caps.
Badass man! With this kind of skill you could realistically make whatever gun model you wanted, even be it a non existing firearm! Perhaps a futuristic cyberpunk looking rifle is possible 😏
Like that? :P
Maaan i thought this post was saying the Silverback MDR had launched 😭 that looks amazing though nice work!
No, I'm faster than Silverback. Waited for their gun in 2019, than started to make my own ;) Thank you!
You could make some serious bank selling these things, could be made cheaper by using a pre-built or standardized gearbox(so how much to buy one)
I prefer not mixing earnings and hobby ;) just want anybody to be able to print favourite gun.
Dang this is awesome! I'm thinking of building my own 3d printed airsoft gun, could I use your gearbox for that?
Yes, you can, but please share your files too.
Damn something about the forestock is just so sexy.
Yes, makes gun really different. I've started attending arts school to understand, how they do it.
That's absolutely incredible! I wouldn't have thought that would work! I'm subbed!
WOW! Really nice job, mate! Starts me thinking about Fallout LARP and making enough guns for an Enclave squad...
Holy fuck desert tech hire this dude when you bring the mdr to the airsoft market
Damn, Bill C-21 compliant! Looks good 👍
About how much did it cost to produce one between parts and filament?
I've made about 7 guns, it was a way af trials and errors. But I think, if you have 3D-printer, than it may cost you about 50$ + airsoft parts.
How does it stand up to bb impacts from other aegs? I’ve been thinking of doing something similar but that always concerned me. Also what filiment were you using? Thingverse doesn’t want to load on my phone because it’s stupid.
Kinda looks like the polish acr bullpup thingy
Anyone know what filament this is?
HTP (hi-tech plast, Russian) ABS+
What is the maximum bed size/height needed?
Thank you! I made once for fallout larp working 3d-printed chainsword with protected chain =)
What is the gearbox specs if the shell is plastic?
It works well with springs up to m140
Will there be an SMG front like in the document?
If so, that may be enough for me to get a 3D printer
Yes, but not too soon, maybe month or more.
May I ask why you chose to do an AEG instead of a gas powered one? What would be your thoughts on a gas powered one? Do you think it is feasible 3d printing most of it?
I don't like gas guns, making aeg is far more interesting to me. I think, this rifle could be converted to gas rather easily.
Longest part is approximately 240,you may print it diagonally. The only tall part is pistol handle (about 110), other parts no more than 50
Is it just me or it looks like the cold war FFAR?
The FFAR is literally a FAMAS
