Used to work at an animal shelter. Had a stray come in whose owners had, we later learned, trained him to sit and smile when meeting someone new. Scared the pants off me when I went to move him from the intake kennel; I reach for the latch and it shoves its face against the door and does this. I thought he was about to take my hand off, poor guy was just being friendly lol.
soooooo polite!!! I hope he found a new family!!
Vet here. This phenomenon is called “mimic grinning”, and most behaviorists believe it arises as a learned behavior from dogs that are especially bonded to their humans, as it is not exhibited in dog:dog interactions without human influence (outside of the standard indicator of hostility).
So your dog probably (nothing is a guarantee is behavioral science) loves you oodles and extras and you should be proud.
aaaah that is so lovely. I absolutely adore Diego (as anyone can tell from my post history haha) and I do feel confident that we give him a really good life, so i hope he has lots to smile about
Pet him for me.
I did this. He smiled.
My parents got rid of my dog when I was at school one day, without telling me, because she would smile like this and they were convinced it was a sign she was going to turn vicious.... She was the sweetest little lab/collie mix and insisted on always sitting in my lap no matter how big she got.
That’s terribly sad. This act is a form of appeasement and is often known as a submissive grin. Sadly most people mistake it for aggression when it’s not.
it's just like the Terminator trying to smile. No idea what they're doing, but doing it with the best intention :3
Mine smiles like this too!
Mine too. I thought he was angry at first but I learned that's how some dogs smile. So sweet.
He’s perfect, just like his smile
He looks adorable
Happy cake day
I taught my Mom and Dads dog to smile this way. He used to walk up to people with that smile and they had no clue what he was doing!
that’s so hilarious. God forbid he ever looks in the mirror
We just lost our 14 year golden last week. It’s been quiet and sad without out her, but this made me smile. Hug your golden for me!
I am so sorry. There is nothing I can say to make that better but I hope you are ok
My Kenny smiling. My dad met him for the first time without anyone at my house and we neglected to tell him about the smiling. So he opened the door to the house and saw this new doberman sitting pretty and smiling at him. He promptly closed the door and called me for backup! 😂 https://imgur.com/RuJfBev.jpg
I know a dog that also does that but right after it she attacks
oooo - scary! :(
My pupper does this too, she looks absolutely horrifying but I know she's just trying to cheer me up. Lol ❤️❤️❤️
Our chocolate lab also does this whenever we come home or when friends (used to) visit. We call it her snarly face.
If you know dogs you can tell if he smiles (a lil dorky) or going to attack.. He is adorable <3 cuddle him!
You mean don't tell him he's the most adorable thing on the planet? I don't think I can do that.
That’s both adorable and terrifying.
We had a lab/Pyrenees mix that used to do this if he got in trouble. Hard to get angry with him, another words he played us like a fiddle.
Lol poor baby trying 😂
please tell me his name is Elvis!
His name is Diego, but Elvis is such a good name for a dog!
I believe I read somewhere that 10% of dogs can smile.
bless him he tries
That's what's called a "submit snarl". The dog is showing submissiveness to its owner, which is why many have said their dogs do it when they are in trouble. Wolves do this to express submission to other wolves as well.
Our German Shepherd smiles. We rescued him when he was a month old or less. When he started losing his baby teeth my husband and I kept saying "Show us those cute teeth!" And check as he was losing them, and as new ones came in. He's four and he smiles all the time, especially when you call him handsome.
It looks scary especially when he's running at you. I have had to tell company he's smiling, he won't hurt you! Lol
Good boi !!!!!!
My dog shows his teeth as well. He's super adorable and loves everyone. [Bently](https://i.imgur.com/lOBNzMe.jpg)
He’s a very handsome goodboi!!!!
One of our family dogs did this too. I loved it but poor guy had a hard time making friends with other dogs when he did this. He was the biggest ball of love.
My bosses dog is a golden retriever and he does that with his face as well when he’s happy, he’s done it since he was a puppy it’s so cute. He walks up to you and snarls his little smile and wiggles his body
My dog used to do this! He really scared our houseguests who couldn't believe that a dog could smile!
... I miss his smiley face greeting me from the top of the stairs ;-(
Idc if anyone sees this, i just appreciate the chance to share a beloved memory of an old friend.
She joined my family when i was in 4th or 5th grade. I had three younger siblings, none older. She was a half great dane, half boxer puppy and my mum raised her like one of us kids. I even helped her graduate from training classes with my mom.
A year in, we noticed she began smiling. Legit smiling, blew our minds. For the next decade, she always greeted us at the door with a smile when us siblings came home.
She gave us so many memories...if i could see her smiling up at me again, id go back to school for the rest of my life.
Our Greyhound does the same thing!! First time she did, we jumped back in fear - now we give her head pets and kisses while she wags her tail wildly! LOL
Dogs are just strange sometimes LOL
That’s really funny, you have my upvote
My golden will do this when she is excited to see me! She doesn’t seem to realise it’s a snarling expression, and I can’t even figure out how she developed the habit. It’s cute, but we taught her to grab her toy when company visits so that they don’t think she’s baring her teeth at them.
We refer to this as our girl's "woof face."
my beagle does a little smirk and side eye combo, it’s adorable
my dog does this every so often. Usually when he is most nervous and I give him love and attention.
My springer spaniel smiled that way. Precious boy ❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my goodness, this warms my heart. I had a golden that did the same thing! We never taught her to smile, but she would bare her teeth and wag her butt furiously whenever she said hello. I miss her so much.
The dog looks like a gremlin when it smiles but it doesn’t fucking matter because it’s such a good boi/girl
Mine does this too and it looks scary as can be but the trainer told us she is actually smiling and sh does it whenever she meets a new dog
My rotti used to give me snarly smiles. Miss my boy.
My catahoula gives me big grins too. No teeth though. His is more of a big squinty smirk.
That would scare the living shit out of me xD
You can tell he’s still wagging his tail, very much a not-aggressive good doggie :)
My girl that passed in 2016 was trained to "smile" which when you say that, she shows her teeth. And if you say it more, she'll show you more then get growly.
Same person taught our current dog a bunch of tricks, one is "pretty" where she gets on her hind legs in a seated position and has the rest of her body balanced upright.
I wouldn't be able to teach her anything but maybe... sit.
It looks like he's saying (Borat voice) "my wife"
I our house we refer to this as ‘stinkface’
I've watched this 20 times. My cocker would do the same thing. Scared the shit out of strangers. Good Boy.
My grandma's dachshund smiled like this.
"oh he dont bite"
I had a Dalmatian who would do that when she was excited and happy. Hard to explain that to people when they would be freaked out.
If that's when he smiles, what does he do when you say attack?? Probably smiles then.
So sweet and cute but looks scary yes
I love goldies. They're so precious.
My childhood dog Boof (blue heeler x jack russell) did this!!!! May his gorgeous soul rest in peace
I used to have something I called "sincere smile" until a friend told me "stop doing that, you look like the joker"
Watching this without audio made me concern
That's lovely. His body language makes his message clear and wouldn't scare me a bit
Things that make you go AWW! Like puppies, bunnies, babies, and so on...
A place for really cute pictures and videos!
