Eh, from what one of my profs in college told me, its overrated. He said nothing tested his love of research like sampling ocean and ice algae in the antarctic, cause his salary was the same as when he was warm and dry in his office :)
Legitimate question, how does one become a whale research? I am about to graduate with a bio degree but I want to pursue a master degree focusing more on animals.
Hello, I am a whale researcher sometimes and have many friends who are full time. Any bio degree is a good foundation, so you’re on the right track. The best next step is to just start reading about the animals you’re interested in to get a sense of which aspects of them you’d enjoy and be good at studying.
Grad school for wildlife research is all about finding a lab that’s a good fit, so as soon as you have some idea of what you want to study, start finding people working in that field and email them. Explain that you are looking to apply to a masters program and ask if they are taking students and have time to chat. Pro tip: professors are busy and get too much email, so if you don’t get a response, try emailing one of their students. They are busy too, but advising undergrads makes them feel like they’ve made progress in life.
The best way to find people to contact is by reading recent scientific papers and paying attention to the first and last author names (first did the most work, last is usually the supervising/senior scientist). Google scholar is a great way to find papers, but your college library probably has some databases too. Just searching for “whales 2020” will probably work.
Good luck! Grad school is a meat grinder, but biology is the best science!
That awkard moment when the novelty has worn between the two of them, and they both want to stop, but they keep going because they don't want to disappoint the other being.
Not exactly. This is Hvaldimir, a former captive beluga who was either released into the wild or set free. (no one knows where exactly he came from, he just showed up in Norwegian waters wearing a harness with Russian wording. Some suspect that he was trained by the Russian military) His time in captivity taught him to be friendly with humans and it seems he has been trained for retrieval.
If this really is Hvaldimir, it seems a bit sad that he travels the waters alone. As far as I know, belugas travel in pods, but Hvaldimir is always seen to be on his own. From the little research I did, there doesn't seem to be a large Beluga population in the area (if any) and I can't help but feel sad that he's all alone in the dark icy waters the majority of the time.
"Stop throwing your shit into the ocean! I'm sick and tired of cleaning up after you."
I actually thought that could be the reason behind it, belugas were seen returning stuff tourists accidentally drop in the water 😂
I’m cold just thinking about how cold that water is
Probably as cold as it could get
This has to be Hvaldimir. I sometimes worry about him that he misses humans. I hope he is happy.
I'd never heard of this before, I just had to look it up. Crazy stuff.
Not sure if it's common knowledge, but hval means whale in Norwegian, so its name is a pun on Vladimir.
🎶Baby beluga in the deep blue sea, swim so wild and swim so free🎶
Heaven above and the sea below. Little white whale on the go!
I'm just amazed...
Is this /r/HvaldimirTheBeluga
He was raised in captivity
No way. That’s incredible!
[That's Hvaldimir, the Russian Spy Whale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hvaldimir?wprov=sfla1)
Oh come on, this is so frickin awesome! Imagine being able to say 'yeah, last winter on an expedition I played fetch with a Beluga whale'
he's an escaped Russian spy, too!
I wonder how they figured out the whale wanted to play catch lol
He probably brought them the ball. :)
Is this a first? Or has this been observed before?
[Hvaldimir ](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=hvaldimir+whae&kp=1&va=b&t=hc&ia=about) a Russian trained Spy Whale.
How tf so they know to bring it back?
*some*People are unsure but this might be hvaldimir a beluga whale which is believed that he has been trained for russian espionage
Wow
The purest of ocean boys
With the rugby world cup ball!

I would love to go on a research expedition to somewhere remote like this. But alas, my forté ended up being history so probably not.

Ah yes, the giant sea dog
This is so nice. This sparks pure unadulterated joy.
Knock-on
Communist beluga.

Big sea pupper doin a fetch.
It’s always a great day for some rugby!
She’s trying to give it back. “Stop throwing your trash where I live!”

Protect animals at all costs

Animals are so neat
The Jets might sign him.
It's gonna be lonley when they leave. :(
The number of things that would need to occur for me to have this kind of experience is astronomical.
I find it annoying that this whale is better at fetch then my own dog... She will come to you then will just lay down and not give you the toy.
That awkard moment when the novelty has worn between the two of them, and they both want to stop, but they keep going because they don't want to disappoint the other being.
How fucking badass is that
Dad: doesn’t want a beluga Family: gets beluga anyways Dad and the beluga
It’s like sea world but not shitty
everybody needs some company, not just humans , wonderful.
wow!! very likely that the beluga whale is lonely and being bullied by his other beluga friends and he found a friend in hooman.

Looks like they're both having a whale of a time!
So they are sea dogs :)
Nature is wild.
Yeezy 350 beluga
Only intelligent animals play.
You know what actually makes this 'Awwww' ? It's happening in the wild, not a Zoo.
Water puppy!
*Pavlovian conditioning intensifies*
This is the coolest thing ever
Isn’t this the whale that escaped the Russian military facility where they trained marine animals to fetch equipment/help divers?
That is so cool
I love that he ignores the guy who retrieved the ball and returns to the guy who threw the ball at the front of the boat.
That's amazing and adorable to see the whale 🐋 Playing fetch with them.
Cute
All of God's creatures are amazing❣
Its all fun and games till the Whale drags you into the ocean after innocently holding the ball up for you to grab.
It must be so hard for it to keep the ball (with air I assume) underwater for so long! The strength these animals have is incredible.
Saw these at the Atlanta zoo. I hated everthing about Atlanta but them.
What a friendly dog
I am less scared of the ocean now
This poor guy must be exhausted! They’ve been throwing that ball for years now.
Big ole water dog!
Is it this against prime directive or something? /s
That is so cool!
At first humans would literally pet anything, now they would play fetch with literally anything.
I feel like the whale has a better chance of actually being able to do it.
When I first read this I thought it said blue whale. I though I was about to be mind blown. Still thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is fantastic!
I have truly wasted my life
This is the only acceptable way for humans to interact with whales.
Husky in previous life!
so qute
Save
Amazing

Turns out he's the first-round draft pick for the Florida dolphins

9/10 Belugas prefer a Gilbert ball
Love all God’s creatures!!
Beautiful
This is just too cute!!!!! 💕
“Here. Don’t lose it again. Why you keep throwing things! Here. Again. Keep it safe. Tom! Goddamn it now I gotta go take it for you.”
Down on her, a right whale bore
It's basically another type of sea-pupper.
Such a good boy playing fetch!
Looks like they installed the fetch module accidently in that Beluga
The cutest Russian spy ever
This is so cool
So cute!!!
That's so awesome! Dream job
Hot damn I love this video.
What a beautiful creature
Well, those were some shitty ass throws.

Whales are so intelligent!!!
such sweet animals I just want to kiss that noggin
Ball
Later, the researcher accidentally hits him on the head hard with the ball; so now you know the full backstory on "Finding Dory's" Bailey.
Nice
Do you show r/aww videos like this to your young kids? My five year old loves it and wants to see a few posts everyday
Al he's trying to say is that don't throw trash to my place
He was cut from the Miami Dolphins.
I could watch this for hours ❤️
If you were to pop the bubble and it’s her what would happen?
"So what can you bring to our company?" "I've played fetch with a wild beluga whale." \*hired on the spot\*
Omg that is so precious
This will never not make me smile
"EA SPORTS, IT’S IN THE GAME"
Poor baby was just trying to return the belongings to the hooman.. but the dumb hooman kept throwing it in the ocean...
Such a beautiful creature.
Awesome 🤩
This is so freaking cool!
Thats amazing! I can't help but think the beluga is just trying to help and really wants to go home now...

Beluga whales have a long history of being used by the Russian navy for research porpoises
