My mom loved whales, she taught 1st grade and every year taught a whole unit on whales. We were in Washington one year and saw a grey whale off the coast, she was ecstatic. She died almost 6 years ago but seeing a grey whale always makes my heart happy and sad. They’re wonderful, and I miss her greatly.
I may be channeling some aspects of your mom. I’m a Washington native, and the highlight of my life has been out in the San Juan Islands and towards Vancouver Island and seen various pods come near and be curious. I have a tattoo of an orca! I will love these water puppies forever, they’re so lovable and cool.
It can be, but only if they don't know you are there or they somehow get spooked. For the most part a medium to large boat is probably safe around large ocean mammals. These things are exceedingly gentle under normal circumstances
Ya that’s what I was thinking. Unless it’s a research boat that needs to interact with them anyway to tag them or something like that. But ya generally you should never touch wild animals like this. It’s totally possible to pass diseases between species like this. A bacteria or virus that may be pretty harmless to us could be deadly to them, and vice versa. It’s one of the big reasons why it’s super illegal to touch manatees and sea turtles if you find them on the beach or along the shoreline.
I mean, interacting with wild species is how we got covid-19.
So sweet... Intelligent and beautiful. In these times when it is absolutely unnecessary, Anyone who would purposely hurt one of these great animals is heartless.
I would probably think I had died and gone to heaven if a whale sought my attention and let me interact with it. What a privilege to be able to interact with such a noble and wonderful creature. Amazing.
Whales and dogs have a [common ancestor](https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=whales+related+to+dogs&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) so that's not terribly surprising
We live on a pretty glorious planet!
We like to pet and suggle all forms of life and as we explore and gain understanding of this blue marble we find that many species love to be pet and cuddled as well!
What’s remarkable is that they have to know that boats can be dangerous. Whaling is still a way to die. And yet they’ll seek out boats, albeit much smaller, for this kind of interaction. And to jump up out of the water to make the humans scream and laugh and laugh and laugh.
Unfortunately, they dont know boats are dangerous. That's why collisions with boats are one of the major threats to large marine mammals. & they don't breach to entertain the humans.. but they are occasionally curious of these large machines we bring into their territory and you get interactions like this.
I adore whales; loved them since I was a kid and probably always will. But there's something existentially terrifying about coming face to face with a creature that big compared to you.
I used to work for a company that did this. It’s amazing, they feel like big wet inner-tubes. These grey whales have their calves in lagoons along the pacific coast of Baja Mexico. Usually from mid-late January to early March.
He could have scraped a few barnacles off while he had the chance, I bet that would have been welcome.
Edit: TIL touching them is dangerous to them and often illegal, so let the barnacles stay.
Depends on where in the world you are. OP doesn’t say where this is but I know in Tonga you can swim with humpbacks and Orcas in Norway legally, both of which I was supposed to do in 2020.

My new goal is to give giant puppers scritchers.
L A R G E goodboye
isnt it a little dangerous to have a boat that close to them tho?
It can be, but only if they don't know you are there or they somehow get spooked. For the most part a medium to large boat is probably safe around large ocean mammals. These things are exceedingly gentle under normal circumstances
Just so you know, that's totally illegal and not a good idea.

When you think about it, whales have no way of scratching an itch in most cases.
Rocks, yeah?
So basically I am very L A R G E
Just so you know, whales should be left alone and not approached by boats
Surprised that this is not the top comment.
Whale you be my friend?
\*thalassophobia intensifies\*
i always wondered if we could make those cow buffer/scratchers but for whales, im sure theyd enjoy less molluscs on them.
“I’ve had this goddamned itch on my nose for I don’t know how many years and...“ “Oh my...” “That feels heavenly!”
That’s so amazing. Jealous!
So sweet... Intelligent and beautiful. In these times when it is absolutely unnecessary, Anyone who would purposely hurt one of these great animals is heartless.
I didn't knew that. It makes me both happy and sad.

a good thing that whales are gentle giants and eat krills.... do you imagine how easly it could take the boat down ?
Yo that's a cute dog what breed is it?
The shirtless david type breed
OMG that brings tears to my eyes!
Well they did evolve from ancient wolves
I did not know that, am less scared of big sea puppers now
I mean same tbh
I cry
Big big goodboy
The whale is so gentle as he approaches the boat

WOW How Amazing that must have been🥰
That would be amazing, and terrifying
We live on a pretty glorious planet! We like to pet and suggle all forms of life and as we explore and gain understanding of this blue marble we find that many species love to be pet and cuddled as well!
What a beautiful moment
That has been a dream of mine since I was 7!!!!

Wow
This is beyond cool!!!
Colossal water puppies.
Barnacles creep me the hell out
Can you even imagine the feeling of HOLDING A FUCKING WHALE?
Yeah, but have you even left a whale in a box on someone's doorstep?
Once a puppy, always a puppy (no matter the size!)
One whale to another "Hey watch how sappy I can make those silly humans act!!!".
I adore whales; loved them since I was a kid and probably always will. But there's something existentially terrifying about coming face to face with a creature that big compared to you.
whales are god
You are correct.
Definitely qualifies for r/bigboye
Wow! They long for Human touch too...
What a privilege.
Gentle Giant
Are those barnacles on the lower half of its snout?
At this point it seems like literally everything is either a dog or cat in disguise - no complaints here tho
Wow they get to pet a whale. I don't think I've ever pet one.
Everyone needs love.
I want to experience this so bad
Such a lucky guy!!
Hey, they are related!
What is Jim from The Office doing touching whales?
Me throws a stick in the ocean: 2seconds later Holy fuuuuucccccckkkk.
Adorable.
oh look it's your mom
This is incredible! Where is the footage from?
As per the original source, San Ignacio lagoon, Mexico.
It doesnt even look real, amazing

And painful.
White people will literally pet anything
No, he's right, we pretty much see everything as a pet to be petted.
Who doesnt?
Laboon!
I was wondering if some other weeb would have the same thought as me
I wanna pick the barnacles off his nose!
That would be painful.
Isn't it also illegal to touch them? We were told it was illegal to touch the dolphins while we were in Hawaii.
Depends on where in the world you are. OP doesn’t say where this is but I know in Tonga you can swim with humpbacks and Orcas in Norway legally, both of which I was supposed to do in 2020.
Would a whale appreciate a good scratch? Videos always show people petting them open hand
isn't it illegal to touch the whales?
I was just thinking the same thing.
it looks unreal
Can whales feel when you touch them?
Any whale can be a sperm whale if you got your stroke game down.
Noob questions: Do the barnacles bother them? Is there an easy way to remove them?
Better question, does the whale lice bother them?
How do these giant animals know that they can get scratches from humans? Last week I saw a video of a seal hugging a diver. How do they know this?
Okay
Biggest water boi
Okay, so they obviously can feel the human skritches. Is it not super uncomfortable to have barnacles growing on you?
My puppy likes to play bite my fingers...
Fun fact: they don’t. They’re whales bruh. They don’t understand the idea of being pet.
Except they might. Studies show whales are pretty smart .

How do you know which they are?
They are the memory of the planet.
The biggest snoot-boop EVAR!
