I had a dog who had a tumor when he was pretty young. We had it removed and he was fine, but it scared us and we were always on the lookout for more. A few years later we saw more lumps on his back, right near his hips. We took him to the vet that afternoon, and the vet examined it, and told us that he's an old dog, and it's pretty common for dogs, as they get older, to get... love handles. He wasn't dying, and he wasn't really overweight, he just had a dad bod.
Dogs are so wonderful.
My dog will start to limp when we're on a long walk and it's hot outside (but pavement is still cool enough to walk on). I pick her up and carry her fat ass home and once we are in air conditioning, she becomes a bunny and hops around like "Look at me! I'm fine!" And then she basically does a roundhouse off of me and goes in search of someone to give her a snack. She's a liar and I love her.
omg i had a cat that exaggerated a limp and then faked it for weeks because we initially gave her so much attention about it.
I knew she was faking when I pretended to leave the room and peeked around the corner when she immediately started walking normal thinking no one was around!
Theyre always worth it. My dog died today and we spent a good penny on medical bills and medications until then, and not a penny is missed. We did all we could 💙
My dog once faked an ear infection. Backstory: his first ear infection was noticed when I caught my dog with one of his ears tilted lower than the healthy one. He had a history of skin allergies, so I expected this to happen eventually in his life. I took him to work (am a vet) and I diagnosed him with otitis externa. Daily ear meds and flushing out both ears every other day, and his infection resolved. A month later, the opposite ear does the lower tilt. Went back to work with me, but both ears looked clean on otoscopic exam. Ear cytology samples came out negative for any bacteria or yeast. Turns out he just really wanted to come to work with me and hang out with the techs. I thought something was off when the tilt stopped after he entered the clinic. I decided to just bring him to work occasionally to let him socialize with the staff. I still love that little toot.
She kept waking up 2 or 3 times at night to go outside which is not like her at all. I thought she had a UTI or a parasite of some sort. She had to be tested for both and have a heart worm test: al normal
All my pets were brats and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, even knowing the agony I had losing them. There's nothing quite like the total adoration that our pets feel for us and we remember every one forever.
Mine also recovers the moment we cross the threshold of the vets. But Having had a dog get sick and die, I’m happy to pay the $50 vet visit tax for my healthy pups dramas.
My cat tweaked her leg jumping off the bed. She woke me with pitiful meows and showed me her limp. A couple hours later and $60 and the vet said she was fine. However, now I don't have a frame, so she doesn't have to jump from as high.
My dog did something similar a couple of years ago. I got up at my normal time to get ready for work and she wouldn’t get out of bed. I lifted her out of bed and she would barely walk and would not go outside or eat any food or treats. I was worried something was really wrong, so I called the vet and they told me to bring her in as soon as I could. I let me boss know I’d be late to work because I thought my dog was really sick and I had to take her to the vet. When we got to the vet’s office, she started acting totally fine and happy. The vet ran some blood tests and gave her a very through exam, but couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary. I was relieved she was fine but annoyed that I spent about $400 for the vet to tell me she must have just been having a rough morning. Lol
I hate posts like this because (even if it is true, I have no idea in this specific case) it puts this idea out there that pets just "fake injuries."
As a veterinarian, I'm always facepalming over things like this-- for example, they come in because their pet is limping then decline x-rays, and when I say "okay well then start with strict rest and pain/inflammatory meds and if it doesn't get better come back okay!" And inevitably they say "I don't need the meds, doc, I don't think he's in pain." ...then why the fuck do you think he's limping?
Sorry that's a bit of a tangent but to the main point:
It's very rare for a pet to fake pain. It's more common that a pet is in pain, but the pain is intermittent, or that they are running/playing in spite of it. No matter how severe the injury, some dogs will still chase squirrels or play fetch or whatever. I did some work in rural Mexico and watched a stray dog with a fractured femur hobble along with the leg dragging behind it, but when he saw a cat, he took off after it, leg flopping behind. When the cat got away he sat and licked his leg nonstop for the next 30 minutes at the site of the fracture. Adrenaline goes a long way towards helping an animal ignore pain.
I'm not saying it never happens, only that it should be considered a diagnosis of exclusion, while a significant chunk of people seem to think it's something that dogs just "do."
No dog has ever faked an injury out of the blue for attention. The only way a dog can learn this is if they have an actual injury and limp because it hurts, and then are rewarded for it and learn to do it again.
That's a pretty smart dog who makes that connection right away. I've got people who can't teach their dog "sit" using treats and months of effort, and yet they think their dog "accidentally learned" what is essentially a difficult trick-- limping-- without any treats, and only attention.
Again, it \*does\* happen, but a) a vet cannot confirm that it's fake. All a vet can do is say that they couldn't localize the pain, and that the x-rays were negative. and b) it's very rare, despite social media making it seem like it's common.
So I'm not saying you shouldn't believe this post. Go ahead and assume it's true, enjoy it, smile at the cute dog and the funny story... all I ask is that you not take away from this story the idea that your dog might limp one day and that he is just pretending, for attention. That is extremely unlikely and 99% of limping dogs are in pain and have an injury, again which may be hard to pinpoint, may come and go, and will virtually never stop a thick-headed dog from using it if they are excited enough.
I’m happy I found your comment, I was about to write the same. Dogs in vet clinics often show less symptoms because of stress. An ear can be itchy without visible signs of otitis because of allergies. Just because we can’t always figure out what they have, doesn’t mean they are faking. It really makes me worry for the pets to read stuff like that.
Better than going in and finding an incurable condition it something requiring thousands of dollars in treatment.
I brought in a ferret that was acting oddly and found the poor little bugger had stones, one huge one which was stuck against his dick bone in the urethra. He recovered fully after having then removed but it was a big bill for a little dude
The first time we got our dog groomed he was cold and shivered a lot, which resulted in him getting lots of sympathy and treats. Ten years later he still shiverers when he doesn't get what he wants.
My dog was walking up some short steps and a glitch in her software had her smacking her back foot on one of the steps. She hopped with that foot in the air for a good 100-150 feet. She kept looking back at me looking for pity. I said "you didn't hit it that hard." She immediately put weight on it and took a dump. Little drama queen that one.
I have a basset who gets a limp whenever life isn’t going exactly her way. We can always tell it’s fake bc when she sees our neighbor, she runs to him without a limp. When she sees me looking, she softens and begins to limp again.
Dogs are smart little jerks aren’t they? 😂
My boy is so whiny! I keep threatening to take him to the vet if he doesn’t stop crying. He’s totally faking. He hates going. Covid puppy and the trauma of getting dropped off really upsets him.
Yup yup I did the same thing with my dog who was acting all lethargic not moving much all day and not wanting to play.
Took him to emergency out of hour vets which cost me £200. The fucker perked up as soon as the vet saw him
My dog did this once, he must have had something irritate his eye so it was watery and he couldn’t open it, so we for a few hours were very concerned....until we noticed he then started squinting every time we started to give him attention...his eye was fine
I once rushed my dog to the doggy er because there was a huge lump on his jaw. 600 dollar bill to discover a treat was stuck on his tooth. I felt like an ass.
The things we do for our pets.
My Valentine's dinner plans were cancled because I had to take my pup to the emergency vet. She had symptoms of an inverted stomach, so pretty scary stuff. After 600 bucks and all 6 hours of waiting there, turns out she just had heartburn.

Excuse me, you can’t just give us this wonderful information and not provide us with a picture of your dog!

I’m so sorry for your loss.

What a smart cutie he must be!
My boy faked a leg/foot injury and we got to the vet before I realized he just wanted to go for a car ride.
what was she faking?

Good she deserves it for a successful bamboozle

Dogtor it hurts when I bark
Then don't bark

That's sometimes the price of cuteness. 🐶
Well, she did have a rough day. She had to go to the vet.
That smile of complete satisfaction 😏 lol
She deserves it. Your girl just wanted your love
Nobody can resist those puppy dog eyes!

Beautiful and adorable ❤️ Thank goodness she’s ok! Wishing you both many happy, healthy, and prosperous years together!

My beagle had emotional derived injuries that weren’t real too. Ahole

My dog fakes a limp when it's time for walkies
She is sooooo cute. Those leathery lips !!! Just as cheeky as my doggies

What breed is your dog?
what was she faking?
Well, its the cheap meats for her for a few months I guess. Cheeky sod!
Looks like you have TWC. Those dogs are super smart and have the personality of a cat.

Hahaha we think my beagle does the same. Fake it till you make it.
I completely understand why you spoil the little baby.
