When this happened, I was a little child. There was a map of my uncle that is designed as a book. On the last pages of the book, there were flags of countries. I was looking and memorize those flags. Finally, I learned them all. Even small cities and towns of some countries too. Capitals of all countries in the world and such... One day my uncle came to us with a new map. There were new countries on the map and new flags. Since I was too little, it was something impossible to me. How in the world new flags and countries could appear? My uncle told me a bit... I was very happy that there were new flags and capitals to memorize. So a small guy in Turkey was happy, just shortly after this incident happened.
Happy b-day Latvia.
Your uncle was like "wake up new countries just dropped"
I’m Colombian and one of my best friends is from Latvia, still blows my mind that it is a country of 2 million people, we managed to meet each other and remain friends over time in a 7 billion world
One of your best friends is the whole of Latvia? O_o
Congratulations, fellow European brothers and sisters!
Lai dzivo Latvija!!! Greetings from fellow escapees.
Latvia is a beautiful country with great wifi
And Riga ist a really cool city, with lots of great Art Nouveau/Jugendstil buildings to visit, as well as the best Church Organ in Northern Europe.
[From Canada to Latvia, happy b-day buddy!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i96ArjlqYj0)
That's funniest thing I've seen today!
Happy independence Latvia! best wishes from Ukraine.
Jauku dienu latviešu draugiem. Daudz mīlestības no Anglijas 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇬🇧🇬🇧
Fun fact, they also rank as one of the freest countries according to the Human Freedom Index (HFI). All of the Baltic’s are highly rated as well.
I love the adoption of liberalism in the Baltics - definitely a case study for others in Europe to follow. You should be hugely proud. GDP per Capita PPP is fast approaching Finland’s due to the latter’s aenemic growth rate in comparison.
Covid will have changed things, but from Estonia’s Wikipedia : According to projections made by CEPII, the GDP per capita could rise to the level of Nordic economies of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway by 2025. According to the same projections, by 2050, Estonia could become the most productive country in the EU, after Luxembourg.
Current GDP per capita PPP estimates from the IMF: https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/jhovtr/gdp_ppp_per_capita_in_europe_october_2020_imf/
I was recently in Russia and this country came up while I was talking to some guy. He says "Latvia is Russian but they broke off from the soviet union and started their own country".
Russians have a unique look on the world.
Happy Independence Day from Mexico, Latvia. I visited your beautiful country a couple of years ago, it was quite the experience.
Congratulations to Latvians from Poland!
Latvia wasn't part of Russian SFSR, it was its own SSR. It became separated from the Soviet Union, not Soviet Russia.
Soviet Union was just a russian empire in cosplay
I remember watching a film years ago, I think it might have been *The Chronicles of Melanie* but I am not certain. It was about a Latvian woman shipped to Siberia. Tragic stuff the Soviets did to the Baltic states, unfortunately it damages relations with Russia to this day. I guess the 'spectre of communism' still haunts Europe.
Amazes me that I still have grandparents who had to survive and go through all the horrors they went through in ww2 and under soviet rule. How do they sleep at night?
Oh, that's nothing. They come to Ukraine to kill us on Russia's behalf.
Congratulations from Ukraine!
Congratulations to Latvia from Finland.
I went there with my new girlfriend 7 years ago. We had only known one another for 4 months and took a trip to Riga.
Latvia is beautiful, but so many things are still broken and beaten up. You could feel the scar the Soviets left.
Public transport was amazing by the way and we really enjoyed the old part of town, the open air museum with the traditional housings and our trip to the East sea was just lovely.
Keep being you, Latvia.
Whats up with all of those friggin Serb accounts?
They outsourced some work from St. Petersburg.
Congrats, braliukas! 🇱🇻
I really like the baltic countries. I wish you all the best Latvia, love from a portuguese.
I love seeing Eastern European solidarity /s
lai dzīvo Latvija! Much love from a northern neighbor. Can't wait to come for a visit again!
Congrats from Georgia!
Happy independence day also fuck Putin
Congratulations Latvians! The few times I´ve had the luck to meet some of you, it has always been a blast.
Why did they stop naming countries after a while
Congratulations from Spain .
Congratulations to the people of Latvia!
congratulations and as always, fuck communism
Fuck yes to all of that.
Congrats Latvians! My Lithuanian parents and many relatives were at the Baltic way when it happened in 1989. Nice show of solidarity between the Baltic nations that was. Independence came only few years after.
Here’s a Wikipedia article for those who are unfamiliar with these happenings:
It was bad enough being occupied by them. Being actually part of the USSR? Yikes.
We have a saying which goes something like: Where Russian boot enters, there won't be growing even grass for the next 30 years.
Good news it's been 31 years then!
And 310 years since Latvia gained "independence" from Swedish Livonia! Hjärtliga gratulationer!
The Good Swedish times, that's how that period in the history in Latvia is called.
Happy rebirthday Latvia. Greetings from Turkey.
Happy independence day Latvia. Latvian kvass is the best
Congrats and stay strong our southern brother. Greetings from Finland.
Congratulations to my Latvian neighbours (I'm Belarusian), but they broke away from the Soviet Union, not Soviet Russia (the RSFSR), which was just another one of the 15 republics and which Latvia hadn't been part of.
Im from latvia but my grandma is bellarusian and her bellarusian sister comes to visit time to time how is it there bro
Happy birthday to the home of my favorite chess player of all time, the Magician from Riga
Chads sang themselves to freedom.
fuck the soviet union!
Congratulations! I wonder how many /r/europe redditors were alive when this happened. Probably fewer than half.
I like Latvia and would like to own some real estate there. I am Lithuanian.
I understand bits and pieces of Latviesu, but I also like the fact that many people in Latvia are half russian, half ukrainian. Mixed people like myself.
Many Lithuanians are secretly envious of the beautiful nature of Latvia. Whenever I travel to Latvia I see how much of your land is forests, how much sea you have.
It's a nice country full of mostly nice people. I worked for a Latvian company for about 2 years and was treated like a royalty. Best job I had.
Hopefully communism will never rear its ugly head in Europe ever again.
"NOOOOOOO Don't say that!!!! It'll definitely work this time"
Nu normali ko lai saka daudz laimes
You baltic states rock for standing up to the USSR! My hat off to you!
How long were you part of the soviet union?
About 45 years
From the soviet union not soviet russia.
I remember being scared because my country (Denmark) was one of the first to recognize it as an independent nation. „oh no, the Russians will come for us“
Congrats from Ukraine.
Let’s hope they het another 31 years to enjoy it!
You pass the [loyalty test](https://eng.lsm.lv/article/politics/saeima/saeima-passes-controversial-teachers-loyalty-amendments.a211421/).**
Their crop yields are so much smaller than that of mighty Latvia.
Gj Latvia!!! Fuck russia!!!
Fuk Russia, stay safe Latvia!
Fuk USSR, fuk Russian federation, but I think that as a territory, as a human community, Russia is interesting part of the World.
And as a Latvian, i feel aad that Russian and Latvian politicians are playing in this "bad neighbor" game.
Congrats! Fuck the USSR and fuck commies and socialists!
I work with a Latvian woman (50s) and she surprised me when she said Latvia was better off when they were in USSR. I was skeptical to say the least but she said Estonia and Lithuania are better off now but not Latvia. Any Latvians have thoughts on this?
People think lots of things about the histories and economies of their own countries, and are very often absurdly wrong.
Latvians have always been independent of Russia. Only Russia failed to realise this when they occupied the smaller neighbour.
Government is one thing. Control of people is another.
We call it the second birth day of our country
The USSR is not "Soviet Russia"! 😢Soviet Russia is the RSFSR, a republic within the USSR. As a Russian, I am not happy when the entire USSR is named after the people who suffered greatly because of the Communists.
I congratulate the Latvian Balto-Slavic brothers on Independence Day from the Communists who wanted to destroy our and your culture. 🇱🇻❤️🇷🇺
We love you, and we hope that Russia will soon get rid of the dictatorial regime and will be with you.
Pls, don’t be Lenin. Pls, don’t be Lenin.
