When my parents lived in Pasadena in the 70’s, my dad was assigned to home teach an inactive guy. My dad was always an amateur astrophysics hobbyist, liked to read the books, etc. So while talking with this guy about his work, my dad asked if he had ever heard of black holes. The man told my dad that not only had he heard of black holes, but he had helped to discover them.
That man was awesome exmo Kip Thorn. I loved when my dad told this story.
Whoah, Kip Thorn was exmo?!?!?
I’m sure Mr. Hawking has already been baptized and has his own planet by now.
hahaha-- you made me crack up in laughter.
I've baptized a few dead old timey celebrities when I worked in the Provo Baptistry while in college in the 80's-- including Sir Isaac Newton (I've since learned that his temple work has been done several times over), Phillip 1 of France, and Sir Francis Bacon (who I'm sure now that I've studied about his life, would be appalled to be posthumously baptized into such a ridiculously, anti-scientific religion).
One of the most peculiar things to me about Nelson’s talk was his portrayal of “doubt” as a bad thing. In the sciences, doubt and skepticism are primary virtues!! It’s how the sausage gets made, and it’s how we learn deeper and deeper truths about the Universe.
One of the things that was so great about this conference is that after Hawking gave his talk, absolutely NOBODY assumed it was correct. In fact, Sabine Hofstader wrote an amazing blog post that night absolutely ripping into his ideas (in a very professional manner!).
This is how science works. We pick things apart, we question everything, we poke holes, we challenge ideas. We doubt. We do all of this in the pursuit of being persuaded by the BEST ideas.
Doubt and faith are fundamentally opposing concepts - but the Church really needs one of these to be able to sell its product.
That’s amazing!!! How fortunate to
Meet such great humans!!!
That's really cool! I hope you were careful not to be affected by Hawking radiation.
SO COOL you’ve met Mr. Hawking. Your post made my day. #lazylearnersunite
Stephen Hawking was more of a prophet than any Mormon prophet ever was or ever will be.
Would love to know the man in the middle.
That’s Jim Bardeen!! A total LEGEND in the field. His dad John actually won the Nobel Prize twice, but Jim has contributed immensely to the field in his own right.
That’s a picture you’ll want to hold on to for the rest of your life. Well done you lazy heathen.
Thank you! It was the 4th or 5th conference I went to that he was also attending, and I’m very glad I got a picture because it was the last time I saw him. :(
Dang, what I would give to meet hawking. What an amazing guy
He was VERY charming and VERY funny!
Why does it look like Stephen Hawking and Mr. Wizard are in your Kitchen?
I want to know too 😂
I love how many physics/astro people there are in this group!
I love how this sub has been flooded with “lazy learner” posts since Sunday.
Can someone give a TL;DR on this “lazy learner” thing? I’ve been seeing it all over and have no idea what it’s about. From context, I’m assuming it’s something from General Conference and a subtle insult at exmos.
This is awesome, I'd love to know more about your academic path!
WOW!! Thank you all so much for the awards!! 🥰
I bet you have some really interesting ideas about outer darkness
Outer Darkness = Black Hole
Can someone explain the lazy learner to a nevermo?
I was curious also, so I went and looked it up. Apparently the president of the Mormon church spoke at a gathering a couple of days ago and called people who don't have enough faith lazy learners and lax disciples.

Biggest “lazy learner” flex yet.
thats dope that you got to meet them.
He was just less valiant in the pre-existence.
Edit: sorry I almost gagged writing that.
That's amazingly amazing! Good for you!
Brain brain shit bro nice work
Lmao, that’s got to be the best title I’ve ever seen
"Black holes are where God divided by zero." Stephen Wright
Pretty much!! This conference was held to address a problem found by the infamous AMPS paper that says bad things happen when you divide by zero. Hahahha
Excuse me kind sir, but how does one become soooo fuckin lazy?
What does this lazy learner thing mean?
Basically you are lazy if you let your learning feed your doubts. You are supposed to remain faithful no matter what you learn.
I would've killed to meet stephan hawking. We were luck he lived as long as he did.
What a fucking slouch. Hey so...some cool physics stuff going on right now eh?
"Mister Hawking, nice to meet you. Please, no need to get up, i insist"
This has to be the absolute best response to the rhetoric of so-called lazy learners 😂 👏👏👏
Well... that’s amazing. Y
I really hope this turns into a Streisand effect. Used to they didn’t have to keep making talks about staying in line but now they’re commonplace at every conference. I hope this makes lots of members say “what is it out there that people are finding that is riling up the old guys so much”, boom, introduced to their own doctrine
Damn you lazy turds and your separated balloon universes.
I've used Mr. Thorne's son as an expert witness on several occasions. In addition to his storied intellect and achievement, he taught his son to be a good human being.
So so cool!!
I just don’t get it. The “lazy learners” are those who remain stalwart members. The non-lazy learners, those who seek out knowledge and learn new thing are the ones that leave the church. So when Russ Nelson says don’t be a lazy learner he is encouraging people to study and learn which leads to them leaving the church, right?
I am not the laziest learner. So I looked up what Nelson actually said. He wasn't saying that people leave the church if and only if they are lazy learners. He said that lazy learners leave the church. The difference is like←→ to →. Nelson is still wrong though. I know some lazy learners with a great deal of faith.
I think many exmormons are eager to warp the bad things cults leaders say into something worse than they actually said. What they actually say is already bad. We don't have to exaggerate. This kind of exaggeration is our lie. The world has a big enough pile of lies without us adding to it.
You’re missing the fairly obvious subtext in his statement.
A forum for ex-mormons and others who have been affected by mormonism to share news, commentary, and comedy about the Mormon church.
