I’m no expert, but it probably is protected by the extreme lack of rain in the Atacama. If it’s drawn on/into rock, it’s probably pretty stable without precipitation to damage it
Wow, I wonder what they were thinking while they made it. Also, I know it's not exactly the same subject but I wonder what those people dreamed of at night...dreaming must have been so strange to them, I wonder if they could concept it.
My guess is that this was some kind of sacred site in their culture and that the figure was their divinity or sone kind of mystical being.

Anyone else feel like you could put a red filter on this, say it was found on mars and freak the fuck out of conspiracy theorists?
I don't understand how these massive designs are just now being discovered. We've had gps satellite imagery for decades, scanning every inch of the globe, down to the hairs on your head and all of the sudden, a huge person design was just magically found.
I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think there are many public projects that allow you to freely browse around the globe in real-time (through satellite images for example), so a lot of stuff that might get found and is of historic importance might go through the 'proper' channels before being disclosed further.
How amazing is it these ancient people created this despite never having the means to able to look at it from above? Which begs the question, why do it at all...?
If you could go back in time and tell the artist that we have the technology now to see their artwork, do you think they would be disappointed or excited?

Just because it was meant to be seen from above doesn't mean aliens. People did all kinds of things to communicate with deities they thought lived in various places. If they made a sacrifice to a volcano or paid tribute to the sea almost no one assumes there's aliens there, but the minute anything faces up it's extraterrestrial.
