About one fifth of the population of Poland died in ww2. The highest percentage of any country in that war.
This makes me want to hug my grandpa. He had to hide under a haystack from Nazis going on a shooting spree when he was a toddler.
Imagine being a tourist and you have no idea about this custom
POV: You're the main character and the NPC is waiting for a response.
Horrible, that city was nearly destroyed between 1943-1944.
The Polish people had a really rough time last century. First from fascists, then the communists. Tugged, pushed and pulled from both east and west.
Dammit Kenny, why’d you keep walking?
They look like military.
The Warsaw Uprising is simultaneously one of the most heartbreaking and most badass things I've ever read about. I didn't know about the annual recognition, but it makes absolute sense.
Yes if only the Soviets would have actually helped instead of watching as the Nazis retook the city.
Dude still running: Ain't no one got time for that!
When you got the shits you gotta go.
Am I the only one who watched this like 6 times through waiting for everyone to start walking?
It took me a couple times too... I was like: that HAS to have been a minute!?
That is simply amazing though. Respectful.
Is it quiet or is everyone yelling “hey! It’s time. STOP!”
There are sirens that sounds all over the city at the right moment
Really looked like a picture until that flags started fluttering, and saw some folks running in the background.
Me trying to do this
Me trying to do this
• sudden urge to shit immediately*
Do you remember when, when the Nazis forced their rule on Poland.
1939 and the allies turned away,
From the underground rose a hope of freedom as a whisper.
City in despair, but they never lost their faith.
Statistically, someone is having sex, what a bummer.
Do you just stop mid thrust?
I do not know what impresses me more, their unity or their clocks.
Well, during that minute, the siren is used so everyone can hear it.
We do something similar, tho not quite as impressive as this, in the Netherlands. As a memorial for those who fought for freedom in WW2, and those who fought for freedom in general. Today, actually, on the 4th of May, at 8PM!
I love that tradition..
This is beautiful. I hope this tradition never dies.
People in the plane:
“*chuckles* I’m in danger!”
Our whole country stops at 11:00am on 11/11. (Australia)
Americans for about 10 years after 9/11 would hold moments of silence, but I haven't seen it done in years.
I remember it especially during school.
17 pm - the time when the uprising started
The video won't play
The survivors of the uprising were later arrested by the Soviets and charged as criminals. Poles couldn’t catch a break. They did manage to take out 17,000 Germans before they were crushed.
Thanks Dan Carlin!
imagine being a tourist and seeing this.
theres always a few people who didnt get the memo
Would be cool if poland wasn't inching towards authoritarian nationalism
imagine this happens as you are holding milk gallons up a flight of stairs.
This gives me Truman Show vibes.
My grandpa is 102 this year! He was in two concentration camps and there is a bunch of medals on his shelf. And a lot of stories to tell.
We have something similar on holocoast memorial day in Israel
Also to remember fallen soldiers and terror victims
I went to Krakow, that city is incredible
Survived the bombing so the buildings are old old.
They left the synagogues as the NAZIS left them, barren with all the history stolen
A sad reminder
Did anyone else watch this multiple times waiting for everything to start moving again? Watched it like 3 or 4 times until I realised it was on a loop lol
In my head: THAT GIRL IS A REAL CROWD PLEASER
Fuck all fascists and soviet communist scum
Za wolność Naszą i Waszą!
Far better than the citizens of Canada do on November 11. At 11:00 every November 11, I come to a complete standstill, and I observe 90% of my coworkers carry on with their work. Breaks my heart. I stand there in silence with the other 10% of my coworkers honoring our soldiers for a total of a measly 2 minutes of silence.
Poland doesn't get nearly enough credit for their actions in WWII. They fought hard in the uprising, one intelligence officer intentionally got himself sent to Aushtwitz to investigate and relay Intel. They fought hard.
It seems that Poland is being currently credited, but in a way that no one expects.
Last year Putin blamed Poland for starting WW2.
The "Polish" concentration camp lie should be pretty well known.
I find that these lies and manipulations are incredibly dangerous, when repeated often enough people might believe them.
Poland is not yet lost!
What are these moving cameras then???!
The entire world needs to do this....not just for this atrocity. But for all..only then will the world understand the true cost.
Australia has ANZAC Day on April 25 every year to commemorate the sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand soldiers with a one minute silence and street marches.
Happens in Bulgaria too, only for Hristo Botev, though (I think)
We also play the air raid sirens and they always wake me up at 10 and I always forget it's for an event and I'm not actually getting bombed
I know hella people from Warsaw. They never mentioned this.
Anyhow, fucking Hitler, what an asshole.
>Anyhow, fucking Hitler, what an asshole.
-Satan, while fucking hitler
Yet oddly enough, Poland is ruled by the authoritarian Law and Justice (PiS) party. 🤷♂️
Really fun to look for the ones not stopping. So far I caught 2 walkers in the third frame, and a guy literally running in between people on the sidewalk in the fourth frame
I think the group of fast walkers were soldiers, so they may have been part of some ceremony
imagine being that one guy that had no idea what this was about, just watching literally everything stop
edit: apparently there's a siren that indicates the start of this
What if the guy still running is a tourist and is freaking the fuuuuck out
Planes in the middle of taking off even freeze in mid-air! It’s wild!
For anything that is InterestingAsFuck
