Ancient Greek culture didn't have mermaids as we know them, but sirens, who were half human, half bird, they still attracted sailors trough singing and attacked them though; later they were portrayed as half women, half fish. Their closer myth to the mermaids are the Nereids, but they didn't attack sailors if I'm not mistaken.
I was referencing sirens, I just didn’t want to name them directly, to save the punchline for the end. Although I actually didn’t know that sirens were actually half bird, I thought those were the gorgons. thanks for the info!
