In 1960, Jazz musician Dave Brubeck cancelled his tour after most venues insisted that he replace his black bassist with a white musician. When one gig allowed them to play but required that he stayed hidden backstage, Brubeck faked a microphone malfunction in order to bring his friend center stage.

[You definitely know this song,](https://youtu.be/02VlSqd401I) even if you didn't know who it was by or what it was called. The bass player, Mr Eugene Wright, passed away this month at 97 years old.
I was not expecting *that* song.
So wow. Have a group to go with that song now.
Thanks!
Dave Brubeck told racism to "Take Five"
I met Brubeck. I was working for a sheet music company and picked him up at the airport and brought him back to the company for a weekend event. I'm scared to death I was playing Billy Joel or something on the radio of the car having no idea who he was.
He would have liked 'Piano man'.
What an awesome example of an internal moral compass. Too many people get their cues from the other arseholes around us. My grandfather was like that. Ruffled feathers everywhere he went (lawyer and activist) but changed laws in my country and made the world a better place. My grandmother too.
There’s not nearly enough attention being paid to the steep price paid every year by brave people fighting for the environment, justice, and equality.
I know a lot of people thought differently back then, but fuck those racist bastards! It’s just appalling to think that shit was commonplace and accepted back then!
Imagine going, Yeah play some Jazz for us, but y'know, without black people...
1959 was a year that changed jazz music and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out is one of them. [More Than 'Kind Of Blue': In 1959, A Few Albums Changed Jazz Forever](https://www.npr.org/2019/04/29/717579612/more-than-kind-of-blue-in-1959-a-few-albums-changed-jazz-forever) Dave told racism to take a *Time Out*.
This is the way
40k then is just over 350k (US) now. Damn. Proud of those dudes.
Legend
Hey, a Brubeck appreciation post! Ya love to see it!
I am a massive Dave Brubeck fan. My Dad raised me listening to his records. I had no idea about this side of Dave. Thank you for sharing this. What an inspiration.
Oh good! Along with his amazing talent of course, I definitely feel like this is something that he should be remembered for!
True hero. Sticking up for whats right is a sign of a true hero
Awesome bass player. Unreplaceable. Here's a piece Wright wrote. https://youtu.be/gKjaFo2Tp5c
I love it
...and then he shrunk the kids
Damn they really messed up that photo.
It's a fucked up world we live in.
So, Rick Moranis is a time traveler. Very interesting.
