[Swansea City] Swansea City has chosen to take a club-wide stance in the battle against abuse and discrimination of all forms on social media. From 5pm today we will not post any content on our official social media channels for seven days. #EnoughIsEnough.

rate the guy who came up with this idea just to get a week off of work
And get paid regardless.
Smartest motherfucker since half of WCW wrestlers after it closed.
If it isn't posted on Twitter, how else am I supposed to know if a player thought it was a "tough game" and whether or not they're ready to "go again next week"? As much as I applaud the sentiment, let's not pretend that this is the answer. Most social media content from clubs and players is banal to put it kindly.

Facebook just leaked 500 millions users data. I hope they stop asking for ID requirements
Just delete your fucking Twitter and Facebook. I find life is so much more positive without either.
Twitter is the cesspool of the Internet
It's a great gesture but I honestly don't think any social media platforms will do anything.
Nice, hope more clubs join this and make it a movement
fair fucking play. bout time some of these clubs start backing up their words with action. good on them.
As much as people like to pretend there are easy solutions, the reality is if you want open public interface then some people are going to be scumbags. You can require ID's, which won't stop everything but will stop a good amount of racist abuse you see - but does come with its own drawbacks - even away from social media companies selling data, they do not have a good track record of keeping data safe, and many people will rightly be concerned about having their ID's attached to things that may put them in danger - be it views that make them a political dissident or they engage in communities that are illegal in their home country. Or you go for a filtering option which the only way it can work to prevent abuse is if its insanely strict in interpreting things as abusive in which case based on how these things have been applied before, a lot of innocent people will be banned - and even then unlikely to stop things entirely. Just about the only workable option i've seen is allowing people to optionally upload ID's and then people can toggle to allow their responses and tags to be only approved people. But of course that is not going to stop people being able to post racist stuff, it just won't be directed to tags.
The idea you can stop online abuse completely when the internet can be accessed by the majority of the world is so stupid. It's like saying 'lets end murder forever'
People are going to be dickheads regardless
Oh no!! Say it ain’t so! You’re not gonna post on social media?? Online abuse of this sort will always be around. Anonymous comments and users is ubiquitous with the internet. Delete the comments, block the users, and move on.
Hope this catches on, more clubs will need to get involved for it to have an impact I reckon.
It probably won't stop racist/abusive comments by itself, but if most major teams do something similar it might force the social media platforms to take some action against it due to less interactions with their platforms.
Can someone explain the upside of this move? Sorry to be cynical but a seven day media blackout seems just like a PR move that has no cost what so ever for the club other than their social media team getting a holiday. I prefer action like donating, bringing attention to diverse footballers etc - something where the club needs to proactively act. Even posting or including a profile pic/cover photo with “Say No to Racism” seems better to me. And to clarify, it is better than nothing but personally I don’t see why it’s worth the praise it’s getting.
PR and "feel good" in certain section of club and football fans. In all honesty, football authorities haven't been able to root out discrimination in their own stadiums where people have to pay, be there physically and face a chance of physical retaliation. If they can't control their own premises, there is no way they will ever be able to do anything about online abuse.
If they want, they can put a block on social media companies. So sponsorship or media deals with FB, Twitter, Reddit, boycotts of matches against teams in such partnerships. But there's no support for it in club or fans.
Does anyone actually expect social media companies to do anything? They’re just going to ignore the problem for a while and then when there’s enough pressure put on them they’ll bung ID requirements on every website and call it a day. They don’t want to have to actually moderate this stuff, track repeat offenders etc, or actually do work to combat it. Win win situation for them, people will finally shut up about how they “need to do more” and they get to harvest more of our personal information at the same time.
> Does anyone actually expect social media companies to do anything?
What can they even do? People just make new accounts when they get banned.
Theyve done it lads, racism is no more
Good idea, but online abuse will never end until online anonymity ends. And that's never happening
Honestly we don’t want that to happen right? Punishing the good because of the bad isn’t ideal. We will never stop it all but it would be nice to limit it a bit more.
So brave
Great gesture but unless companies that give a lot of money to social media companies for promoted posts and ads start pulling their investments, it won't make a difference.
You’re never going to stop random anonymous wackos from sending whatever they want. Better not to publicise every single incident & give them attention. Or just get off social media
Oh no... Anyway.
Very brave of them.
Stunning
That’ll really show all the racists out there who’s boss!
What would you do instead then?
Wow 7 days without posting. Now that’s hardcore right there. Really will make a point.
"For seven days" So pointless then. Do it until the abuse stops/measures are put in place to prevent abuse, then we'll know you're serious. Otherwise this is just PR fluff.
> So pointless then.
It's a start. If more clubs followed suit, even just for seven days it would get more and more attention. And gaining attention is a start towards getting the conversation going, and putting pressure on.
Wow 7 days... I’m sure Facebook and Twitter will really miss Swansea City FC for a week. All players and clubs should come off it indefinitely until they sort their platforms out.
It's the equivalent of saying Qatar bad then going to the WC anyway.
Lmao Social media won’t do shit unless it benefit themselves (avoid getting sued/censoring opp voice/create fake agenda and fake trend etc)
Lol this doesn’t do anything
Achieves nothing this is nothing more pr and virtue signalling what about the hundreds of businesses you didn't pay huh?
7 days are you taking the piss
Without abuse and discrimination what else does social media have to offer?
We will be locking [r/swanseacity](https://www.reddit.com/r/swanseacity/) in solidarity with this as well - Reddit is equally guilty of letting racism and other forms of bigotry fester, and as moderators we see no support in dealing with it in our own subreddits.
What support would you like to see? I’m curious because most of the posts in that subreddit don’t have very many comments. Quick scroll through and the highest I saw was 130 comments and it was a match thread. Seems pretty simple enough for you to ban someone as soon as you see their racist comment.
For bigger subreddits, should be rather simple to have automod remove comments for racist remarks and then have moderators to approve if someone is just going “You can’t call someone a ____.” I could be misunderstanding what all mods can do with automod though. I know in r/cars any comment the bot thinks is a meme gets removed so figure you could blacklist words/phrases
I'm sure their 1000 followers are upset
Instagram gave players the option to block DMs from people they don't know, doesn't seem like they use it? No player in the right mind would give out their phone number to the world, I don't see how this is much different.
Wtf is the point of this... It does nothing... Swansea irrelevant, no cap
A whole 7 days??? That'll show them
[I was saying this yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/mm08kw/liverpool_fc_statement_against_racial_abuse_on/gtor02w/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)! Can't believe it actually happened though. If more clubs do this things will change.
You know humanity is fucked when the anti-racism posts are being downvoted lmao
Football doesn't do actual anti racism, just empty gesturing like this.
A week won't do anything. They need to stop using it indefinitely.
Ok.
Enough is enough! For a week.
this will literally achieve nothing, the world will never be perfect, there will always be trolls who live for attention and love being hated, bringing more attention to this will only make them keep going, that is the sad truth
This is brilliant. Massive respect to Swansea taking things into their own hands. Can you only imagine if all football clubs around the world unite together in this movement to stop using platforms that aren't seriously moderated by the companies that own the platforms? Huge numbers of users dropping off and not using the platform would be the first time since the development of these platforms that they would see a large decrease in users over time. That is something they will shit themselves about. That will bring about action and a response from them to do something to ensure they can keep their users but at the same time implement actual rules and restrictions and take it seriously to moderate all accounts on their platforms. We talk about spreading awareness and you always see people posting on their instagram stories etc but there is no real action taking place that is in any way affecting these companies and pushing them to implement change. Taking a stand against the use of their services unless properly moderated as should be (they obviously couldn't care less and only have money on their mind but what's new) would imo cause them to react in some way by the very least and that could be the start of something better. I'm not one for social media I don't use it and have grown to hate it over the years due to the amount of utter rubbish there is on almost any platform you choose (bar reddit, and why? It's moderated 💡) and the false advertising and fake news, toxicity etc the list is practically endless. Some people love social media and while I couldn't disagree more, everyone has a right to like/dislike whatever they want and that's fine with me, but I'm sure we can all agree (or at least the sane ones can) that we all hate seeing racism anywhere in the world be it online or in real life, and would prefer to abolish it entirely. I saw an interview of Morgan Freeman once who mentioned that if you want racism to go away (metaphorically speaking) then just stop talking about it. This doesn't mean that we drop it and pretend that it doesn't exist, but the more attention you give to a bully the more likely they are to bully and the same exact concept works with racism. Racism in football has been an issue for ages and it somehow feels like it's getting worse not better because of all the attention on it at the moment. Yes I understand it's being reported more than it used to be which could be one of the factors as to why it seems like more cases of racism are occurring but I'm not so sure if I entirely agree with that because I've seen anti racism slogans in football dating back as early as 2006/7 if not before, it's not about awareness everyone knows that racism is bad and its not something which people are unaware of, we lack action and if more clubs, companies, organizations, people in general, would follow Swansea in unity I firmly believe that it would bring about enough pressure on those in control to force them to act in risk of losing so many users (and billions in the process which is their only concern, so let's play their game if they want to focus on the money and hit them where it hurts). Rant over
Every club and player should do this at the same time
