You don't get to pick your own nickname
And as soon as you complain about your nickname you make it permanent.
[I'm pretty sure it's Holland Oates. Holland is his first name and Oates is his last name ](https://youtu.be/DbeLZqGuo2E)
Which is ridiculous because the band’s name is clearly Haulin’ Oats.
And then the marketing wonks took over.
Much like John Mellencamp, who was initially forced to release as "Johnny Cougar," and had to fight tooth and nail to (gradually) switch over to his actual name.
Know what else fights tooth and nail? A cougar.
> The idea of 'Hall and Oates', this two-headed monster, this thing, is not anything we've ever wanted or liked." In a 2015 interview, Oates noted that "it's a horrible name" and that "it was a totally conscious decision" not to be known as "Hall & Oates". "We didn’t want to be the Everly Brothers, or Loggins & Messina, or whatever."
I like how it’s literally just their last names and they say it’s a horrible name
They still went after a food company that tried to call their product *Haulin' Oats*. And the Righteous Brothers got their name at a performance when someone said, "That was righteous, brother!". Household names are tough to achieve; better go with whatever catches on.
Babyface got his name from Bootsy Collins, that’s what Bootsy called him when he met him. He hated it to but then when he was opening for another act they announced him as “Babyface” and the crowd loved it.
Reminds me of Leonard Nimoy's first autobiography "I Am Not Spock".
He followed up years later with another called "I Am Spock"
The first book came out of a fear of typecasting. In the second one, he embraces his identity as Spock, the role that brought him so many good things, while making it clear that's not all he is.
I can't believe I never knew this considering how much I like Daryl Hall and John Oates.
I like Daryl Hall more than I like John Oates.
Not only that, but on the album covers, they typically don't even use the word "and". Just the two names.
Nobodies pumping out 6 syllables every time they wanna reference you
Tell that to Perihelion Wisenheimer. You'll be dead before you blink.
They seem to have embraced it on their website... and tours... and live albums...
Because if they didn't people wouldn't know to buy tickets and albums. It's just easier they go with it even if they don't like it
Garfunkel and Oates.
That's Simon Garfunkel and Holland Oates to you, pal!
I love that the wiki is under Hall & Oates and the first line is *"Daryl Hall & John Oates" redirects here.*
They should have picked a more marketable name... fortunately their music was good enough to get other ppl to do it for them.
Hah, I just read their wiki yesterday. Get outta my head Charles.
Make sure to call 719-26-OATES for your free listen to Callin' Oates. The emergency Hall and Oates line.

What a run they had. They completely owned the first half of the 80's along with MJ, before Madonna came along.
No ones going to say “Did you hear that Daryl Hall and John Oats song?” lads.
But when all of your customers and media gives you a new shortened name, trademark it, and let the dough roll in.
My apologies to John Hall and Daryl Oates for the title.
The chaps from Hall & Oates?
Hall and Oates sounds like the name of a breakfast cereal
I find it funny that he doesn’t like the shortened version, but thought “Daryl Hall John Oates” was/is a good band name. I could probably argue it is the worst band name of any highly successful band ever. All things considered “Hall & Oates” is a pretty good name. Makes it easy for casual listeners, and fans will know that it is Daryl Hall and John Oates. So he gets both the casual recognition, and the specific recognition he is wanting.
Yeah, that's what happens when you don't pick a band name I guess. Nobody wants to say "Daryl Hall and John Oates" every time.
Yeah, Jethro Tull never liked to be called Mr. Tull. Said Mr. Tull was his father.
I can’t go for that. No can do.
Daryl & John
DH & JO
I love so many of Daryl & John's hits
Excuse me, Mr. Daryl Franklin Hohl and Mr. John William Oates
They still cashed the checks.
They never really liked each other either.
They made a LOT of albums for two dudes who didn't like each other
Whenever "You Make My Dreams Come True" comes on the radio, it's fun to sing along with lyrics from "Give It Away" by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
What I got you've got
and put it in you
Just like Amazing Grace and the Gilligan's Island theme song.
Also War Pigs and the Meow Mix jingle.
Also, it's Eagles not The Eagles
Nobody calls them that either
I can't go for that.
Thing is noone really cared about their first names, we just liked their music.
I mean, if you listen to their “Live in Dublin” album you’ll hear Darryl refer to them as “Hall & Oates”, sooooo 🤷🏻♀️
Dial (719) 266-2837 for some emergency H&O.
They’re the musicians. They deal with the notes.
I can't go for that. No.
I recall a radio DJ years ago thinking, when he first heard the name, thought it was “Haulin’ Oats”.
Interesting. On YouTube Music it's Hall & Oates, but on iTunes it's Daryl Hall & John Oates. You have to either create the artist channel yourself or your record label does it on YT Music, so that's peculiar.
Fine, it's John Hall and Oates now
My nephew thought they were a Dutch band.
I thought it was The Creep and The Mustache
Wait... it’s not Hollen Dotes?
You mean Holland Oates, right?
