Carmen Amaya was considered the greatest Flamenco dancer ever and was the first woman to master the intricate footwork that was often reserved for the best male dancers. Here she is dancing in 1944 at around 30 years of age.
Amaya was born to an impoverished family in Barcelona in 1913. At age 4, she began to accompany her guitarist father at night to dance and sing in pubs. They earneda living by collecting the coins that their audience would throw on the floor. She gradually worked her way up to performing in small theaters. In 1929, her name was printed for the first time in a local newspaper. An art critc by the name of Sebastià Gasch wrote the following review:
"'Suddenly a jump! And the gypsy girl danced. Indescribable. Soul. Pure Soul. Feeling made flesh. The floorboards vibrated with unprecedented brutality and incredible precision. La Capitana was a gross product of Nature. Like all gypsies, She must have been born dancing. It was before school, before the academy. All that she knows, She must have known from birth. Promptly, the viewer feels subjugated, upset, dominated by the face of La Capitana, by her fierce hip movements, by the bravery of her pirouettes and the force of her broken turns, whose animal ardor ran parallel with the astonishing accuracy with which she executed them. The raging battery of her heels and the unsteady play of her arms now aroused, excited, then collapsing, surrendered, abandoned, dead, gently moved by the shoulders, are still recorded in our memories like indelible plaques. what caused us to look at contortions, her blood, her violence, her wild impetuosity as a caste dancer"
Her fame continued to grow and soon she was rubbing shoulders with celebrities in Hollywood. In 1941, she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and even had the opportunity to meet Franklin D. Roosevelt who invited her to dance at the White House. She passed away in 1963 at the age of 50 due to kidney failure.
> There are hypotheses that point to the influence on flamenco of types of dance from the Indian subcontinent - the place of origin of the Romani people - such as the kathak dance. But also, the documentary Gurumbé, songs from your black memory, shows the African influence on the rhythms and choreographies of flamenco. The musician and anthropologist Raúl Rodríguez points out that in the Bantu language fanda means party, and the suffix -ngo (as in "Congo" or "Mandinga") indicates a possible African origin of the word "fandango".

This is the first I’ve heard of this. You would think we would know if this is true or not by now.
As someone just starting to dip their toes into learning flamenco style guitar, I had no idea folks dance to it too! This is so cool and provides a lot of context I didn’t have before, can’t wait to look into this some more!
Counting Crows left a flamenco dancing breadcrumb for me in their song *Mr. Jones* when I was a youngster.
>I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
***With a black-haired flamenco dancer***
***You know she dances while his father plays guitar***
She's suddenly beautiful
I asked my dad what a flamenco dancer is. He told me about Carmen Amaya.
Why did they speed up the video? It was already amazing, but when you speed it up you take away from the skill and entertainment of the whole thing and make people say "They weren't that great. It was just fast forwarded.
[u/Sleeeepy\_Hollow](https://www.reddit.com/user/Sleeeepy_Hollow/) you annoy me.
I wasn’t a flamenco dancer but I was a tap dance for 13 years.
If I could turn this performance into a DDR playable game, we would need to add a heel, ball and toe icon for the left and right foot.
So instead of 4 directional arrows, you have 3 foot zones for your right, 3 foot zones for the left. You have to follow the left and right pattern and zone exactly as it shows. You can’t throw in a left toe when it says right toe.
We would also need to add in a sound meter to judge how loud and clear (clear is very important) each sound is. If it sounds like you just threw you shoes down a flight of stairs, no points. If you can make your feet sound like a drumroll, points.
Lastly we need a height meter. A little bit of bouncing is acceptable, but if you are jumping high and slamming your feet down to compensate and make noise, no points.
The current video is likely sped up to adjust for current frame rates, but probably not as much as everyone thinks. Let’s set the current video’s speed at Expert, if you’re just starting DDR Flamenco, where will you set your difficulty level?
The reason this looks easy and unimpressive is that she’s the best. It’s like looking at a professional athlete or musical performer and thinking “I can do that. That doesn’t look that hard.”
My response to anyone who says this isn’t impressive: you do it.
I’m not trying to be rude, but honestly try to dance exactly like she does. Make your feet as loud and clear as her, keep your upper body just as tight and controlled, keep as level to the ground as her (don’t jump or bounce). In short, make this look as easy as you think it does.
I got to see a flamenco dancer when I visited Spain a few years ago and it was awesome. She was so fast and it was really cool. One of the top shows we saw while there.
Can't remember where it was unfortunately. Seville I thiiink?
I may be showing my age here but all I can think of is that episode of Family Matters whenever Steve hears the word Flamenco he would dance around the room "Flamenco!!" Simpler times.
Takes a lot of stamina and leg strength to do that. Try to pounce your feet on the floor this fast for 2 minutes. Draining. And she does it with incredible precision and strength.
I went to a Flamenco concert some years ago. I learned that it is culturally fascinating, beautiful, incredibly difficult, and my limit for enjoying it is *exactly* as long as this clip.
Dude that's crazy. People go nuts at concerts today when they hear a drummer solo and it sounds like this. With their hands and their feet. She's awesome

That's the most flattering racism I've ever seen.
Seems like every time this is reposted its sped up more and more
First time I’ve seen it personally

It’s not terribly impressive until you turn the sound on and realize shes making tap dancing sounds with her feet.
And the video is sped up

Holy shit. That was incredible! Those spins were nuts!
All the hair on my body simultaneously stood up.
Same!

The correct speed it appears.

Mesmerizing...I don’t know how many times I watched that.
No beauty can compare to that of a woman who shatters glass ceilings. ¡Olé! ¡Así se baila!
u/redditspeedbot 0.5X
Even slowed down she’s still insanely fast.
Amaya becomes....!!!
OWLETTE!
This girl stomps
I accidentally stepped on my toes watching this video
Then there’s me brining out the suburban dad sprinkler at weddings.
You’re like the Mikhail Baryshnikov of dads dancing at weddings.
I see why nobody does this anymore
All of those WWII soldiers on leave deciding to watch a dance and then they’re met with shoes that sound like machine guns.
My god. This is mind blowing. That's some skill. Really impressive.
When the pizza rolls are done. This is amazing thanks for the rabbit hole
Those hips don’t lie
I couldn’t help but imagine Job from Arrested Development doing his chicken dance.
I can barely walk without tripping over my own feet. This is incredible!

Highly recommend seeing Flamenco performed if you ever have the opportunity. It’s mesmerizing.
Looks like me when the sand is hot.

I'm getting Saving Private Ryan flashbacks listening to this. Just add mortar fire and screaming.
Wow
Don Flamenco
Cartoon running sounds
Ho. Ly. Sh. It.
I love how they all start watching her feet like "Holy shit there's no way we could beat her in a dance off"
Lads are truly impressed. Not even checking out her butt.
Sounds like a metalcore drum beat
I may be showing my age here but all I can think of is that episode of Family Matters whenever Steve hears the word Flamenco he would dance around the room "Flamenco!!" Simpler times.
I wish I had her posture.
I think her bootie growing
Damn. She must’ve had legs of absolute steel.
Sounds like the beginning of Hot For Teacher
Takes a lot of stamina and leg strength to do that. Try to pounce your feet on the floor this fast for 2 minutes. Draining. And she does it with incredible precision and strength.
Dance Dance Revolution Franco Edition.
Thats just brilliant.
Druuuuuuuum solo!
0:21 she turned into a techno club
My ADHD makes me do that too.
is it me or is the entire band staring at her bum?
the spin gave me chills
Leg day be like...
This is just...like....tap dancing with extra steps /s
If I could do that the spider in my shower stall would have been history.
I wanna see her calves

That hair flip gives me chills
My upstairs neighbor would have given her a run for her money
The way the top half of her body isn’t moving at all.
She’s just stepping on the ants
Imagine this lady playing DDR
Whoa!! Her calf muscles must have been epic..
That can’t be good for your joints, right?
I've only ever witnessed one person do it better: https://youtu.be/uDb00Mx7D7g?t=120
And that's normal speed. Wow.
If i were a war veteran, i'd be having flashbacks now.
Damn! My knees are killing me now. That is absolutely incredible!!!
We all know she learned how to dance from Don Flemenco, the boxing legend.
She’s hot
And she did it in heeled shoes
Looks slightly sped up
Gojira
It was cool last week, also. And the previous week.
Cool
Amazing
Yeah I’m just here to pay respect to one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.
My upstairs neighbors must be great at this!
Sheeeesh
So THATS who lives above me.
I like how the men are actually looking at her footwork
Doing all that (minus the spinning) while keeping your upper body stationary is pretty damn amazing.
You can hear some bass kicking at some point
I bet she had thighs of steel!
I like when her hair comes out.
I could do with more of those sweet sweet spins she does at the end there.
This is absolutely annoying, and anybody who says otherwise is lying.
That's witchcraft
That's my mum making me test the shoes in the shop before buying them.
I don’t care if you’re a man, woman or donkey. Unbelievable mastery of a craft has no him/her in it. You’re just that good
I was today years old when I found it it's not flamingo dancer
That was like a street fighter full bar super combo
It feels like I’m watching happy feet again 😂
me during a test.
Am I the only one hearing a Neil Peart drum solo??
Gave me chills. Also, I think a kick from that woman would send anyone to the afterworld and beyond
Put this on the speaker and make my dad have flash backs
It’s almost comical because she moves so insanely fast
I would not want to live in the apartment under her that's for sure lol
Impressive.
Just Freaking WOW!! ♡♡♡♡ !!
At first I was like, ok thats interesting. But then she started moving around and damn thats impressive. The precision of her movements is incredible.
I have a question! Do people that are new to this style of dancing get stress fractures in their shins?
Wow!
I have a lady crush on her now 😻
Tbh the tempo at 0:20 reminded me of an EDM drop, would be awesome if someone remixed this
When that direct deposit hits 🙌🏽
Footage looks sped up
I went to a Flamenco concert some years ago. I learned that it is culturally fascinating, beautiful, incredibly difficult, and my limit for enjoying it is *exactly* as long as this clip.
Holy hell that was awesome!
That was rad as hell!
I remember my first time doing max 300 on expert
My roommates at 2 in the morning.
I honestly didn’t know humans could move like that.
When I prove them wrong with facts.
The book 'the moon sister', one of the seven sisters books, is based on her life. Fascinating to read
Me having to do the pee pee dance about 3 seconds after I start washing dishes. Every. Damn. Time.
This got me going
It Djent !
They don't dance like Carmen no more...
What are you doing step dance?
Was this sped up some?

In love . Love . Love
Tap dancing ain't shit apparently!
That was some gangsta shit
Cockroaches never saw her coming
Oh sure, y’all celebrate her “flamenco dancing skills” but when I do this my downstairs neighbor tries to call the cops on me. SMH. Double standards.
Dude that's crazy. People go nuts at concerts today when they hear a drummer solo and it sounds like this. With their hands and their feet. She's awesome
That one Geico commercial be like
Chills
The dancing destroyed her kidneys. Take up ballroom dancing instead.
