This monster is made of solid walnut with walnut burl veneer, finished with a high gloss polyurethane. The inside is lined with Spanish Cedar, and has a 200+ cigar capacity.
Thankful this is a humidor...usually when you see a nice box like this, it marks the end of a life rather than the beginning of one. Congrats on the new addition.
You got time for one more box. First couple of weeks, the baby just eats and sleeps. It gives you a false sense of security and you start to wonder why everyone complains about having a baby. After that though... good luck.
I'm no expert, but my understanding off of memory and zero googling is that cigars age best/don't degrade if stored around 70% humidity and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. A humidor is basically a box with a damp sponge in it. The damp sponge helps maintain humidity. Most humidors are also lined with cedar most of the time, and I'm sure that serves a purpose too, but I don't know what it is.
Awesome work! Any tips? I have a couple I started last year and they have made their way to the back of a shelf... Im taking a veneering class in May to get a better handle on that process, and will be diving back into my builds this summer. Any additional advice would be great :)
Thank you! You can use regular titebond for veneering, but they make a dedicated veneer glue cuts bleed through to almost nothing. I highly recommend it. Otherwise, jut make sure you apply even pressure and you're golden.
That veneer is truly beautiful and the whole thing looks very well crafted! Excellent work. Moreover, congrats and welcome to fatherhood! It's truly the most fun adventure ever.
That looks super nice! Being a dad is super cool and the good thing about newborns is they sleep often. Just enough time to sneak into the shop and saw some shit!
These are thin sheets of wood shaved from the gnarly knobby parts of the tree at the base or where large branches split off. The discoloration is where the growth rings would be, but since the wood is so "turbulent" there, it goes in every which direction.
Congrats and beautiful work! I’m a dad of 3 now and there is nothing better than having our oldest help me with our projects!
She’s is 3 1/2 and loves spending time in the garage with me. We have 1 year old twins who are a bit too young to “help” haha.
I’d say around 2 1/2 our oldest really started to show interest in working with me. You’ll be back building in no time! Enjoy the time with your family and congrats again!!
Very beautiful! I too am a soon to be first time father. Due date is 4/19 and I can’t wait to meet my little girl.
I wish you the best of luck and good health for you and your family.
Thanks! this was done with shelac, grain filler, and then many many coats of wipe on poly. It takes a while to build up a nice finish, but is good for large boxes like this since it wont drip off the side.
Congrats on becoming a dad. I felt this same way, giving up on a hobby of mine when I had my first very young. What I actually found is I was more content working on my projects in small chunks while the baby was asleep etc. Don’t give up something you love!
Looks great! I thought the same as you when I had my daughter, but I still manage to get in the shop. Admittedly it's only about an hour a week, but it's a great chance to have some me time! (my wife also gets some her time once a week)
Congrats on the sex!
Joking aside, I'm confident that you'll be a great dad. When they're old enough, teach them the ways of woodworking. Between school and activities, this is going to be difficult but they will thank you for it later in life and they will never forget the time they spent with their dad.
You only have about 1,000 weekends from the time they are born until they reach adulthood so make them count!
Love it! Really nice choice of wood and really well made! Just wanted to say, if you had the time and passion to make more; you could totally make a small business out of this. Handcrafted humidors are pretty pricey and with the baby coming, it won't harm to have a bit of extra cash. Either way, love the work, and good luck with your new addition!!
Nahhh with only 1 kid you'll have plenty of time.. wait until the 2nd arrives ;) Double Trouble !

But so fun.. I took up leather crafting because it was less time consuming.
After about 6 months you’ll be back! You’ll be desperate to be back! Congratulations it’s way more amazing than they can even explain to you the feeling you will be filled with when you first see your new baby.
Got any plans that a newbie could use? I’d like to build a humidor of a similar size but I’m pretty fresh. I have a miter saw, circular saw and a variety of clamps.
Hey! Have drawn up a few small humidors myself, and made a large one for a commercial project, but haven’t nailed down a small hygrometer or humidifier. Do you mind sharing what you used?
fellow woodworker and BOTL here. Couple of Qs:
1. Why veneer if using solid maple
2. How did you cut in the corner inlays of solid wood?
3. What finish and how did you apply
4. Any particular videos you used/liked. I've seen the woodwhisper's build
1. This was built to match a box built by a particular watchmaker, and thats how they did it.
2. Built a normal box with veneered wood, then cut rabbets and placed matching walnut to match the removed wood.
3. Shelac as a sanding sealer, 5 coats of grain filler, many coats of wipe on high gloss poly
4. Not particularly, but I'd love to see some if you have any.
Congrats, but as a 3x dad my advice is don't give up the things you love. Make time for all of it. No reason to resent not doing something you're good at or enjoy simply because of life changes. Some of the best memories I have are of doing things as a child with adults that they clearly loved, and doing things with my kids that I enjoy now...

Looks awesome man!
I only read “about to become a first time dad” then saw the pictures and thought “he built a humidor for his baby?”
Haha, i think I've got a few more years before they're gonna need their own humidor
Thankful this is a humidor...usually when you see a nice box like this, it marks the end of a life rather than the beginning of one. Congrats on the new addition.
Thank you!
Beautiful work, and congratulations!
Thank you!

What kind of magic sleeping baby did you have?
Welcome to the greatest adventure!
Thank you! Pretty nervous TBH
ELI5 what functions these serve?

Great job! Are you planning on bringing this to the hospital to hand out cigars when the baby comes?
Thanks! This one's a bit too heavy to be hucking around the hospital, but there will definitely be some cigars.

WOW Fantastic, Congratulations also
Thank you!
Thats incredible 👏 great work
Thanks!
It looks beautiful.
Thanks!
Congratulations, you are going to build the most beautiful toyboxes!
I'm looking forward to it!
Beautiful work. And congrats on your impending family addition!

Thank you!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
That is absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you!
congrats daddio!
Thank you!
That's amazing....plans?
Thank you! I don't have any solid plans. I have a few drawings somewhere but usually these things often tell me what form they want to take.
The wood selection was great, nice character.
Thank you! This was designed to mimic a Breguet watch, so the fine folks over there did the heavy lifting in terms of design.
Congratulations!
Thanks!
Very cool work dude 👊
Thank you!
That looks super nice! Being a dad is super cool and the good thing about newborns is they sleep often. Just enough time to sneak into the shop and saw some shit!
Thanks, I'm going to try!
Can someone inform me on why the wood is that color.

That is a beautiful humidor
Thank you!
Nice work 👌🏼
Thank you!
The baby will love it great work
haha thanks!

Thank you! I'm looking forward to teaching them the craft.
Oh man congratulations!! me too, but I haven’t even built one humidor...just another thing to add to the list haha
Thanks! Theres no time like the present to learn a new skill
Very beautiful! I too am a soon to be first time father. Due date is 4/19 and I can’t wait to meet my little girl. I wish you the best of luck and good health for you and your family.
Thank you, and congratulations!
It's a beauty. Congrats on becoming a dad. I believe you will find it the most rewarding thing that has ever happened to you. Good luck!!!
Thanks!
Did you spray the poly? Did you wipe on and polish?
Wipe on with many coats.
I mean, you could always start making baby humidors instead tho.... no?
Haha, there might be a market for that.
This looks amazing. I want to build stuff like this. But I’m having issues with lacquer on the sides. How did you do it?
Thanks! this was done with shelac, grain filler, and then many many coats of wipe on poly. It takes a while to build up a nice finish, but is good for large boxes like this since it wont drip off the side.
You won’t be able to stay away. How about building a toy chest for the little one - believe me, you’ll need it.
Thats definitely on the build list

Nah, that baby will sleep a lot. I started woodworking when I had kids. 20 years and 4 kids later, I’m still doing it all the time.
Do you have an Instagram?

Probably less loud too. I'll have to keep that in mind.

I usually point people to this box tutorial:

Its pretty simple and can be extrapolated to fit your needs.
It’s beautiful
Hey! Have drawn up a few small humidors myself, and made a large one for a commercial project, but haven’t nailed down a small hygrometer or humidifier. Do you mind sharing what you used?
This one is using a cigar oasis electronic humidifier. I personally use boveda packets and a cheap digital hygrometer from amazon.

Do the cigars take up the smell of the wood?
That is absolutely beautiful. Congrats on becoming a dad! I hope the future finds you filling it with padrons, cohibas, and other delivious cigars.
I can smell it already.
Looks like you got yourself the perfect humidor to store some great cigars for such an occasion! 🎊
That wood on the outside is gorgeous

Do you sell these at all? Would be really interested if you have an online store or something.
I do from time to time. I usually do these for redditors on a commission basis. Shoot me a DM in about 6 months or so and we can talk!
I never smoke cigars but having this would make me want to get some lol
I'm not particularly a big cigar guy myself, but I do enjoy making humidors!
So, next post is the crib?
I'd love to. Have to convince the wife to let me!
That looks amazing! My goal is to build one someday but I would need one at least 10x size lol
Dont let your dreams be dreams! I really want do find a piece of furniture and then retromod it and turn it into a massive humidor.
Beautiful! Much bigger than I'd ever need.
Never wasting your wood I see

Interesting. I think this sub is way more my speed than daddit.
That’s an absolutely beauty
Thank you!
BEAUTIFUL
Thanks!
I think you made me cum
Head over to /r/daddit! Great work and congratulations!
It can double as a holder for the diapers.
Do you have a website?
Not at the moment. I have an etsy ready to go, but commissions keep me busy.
Congrats! my first is 9 months old and it’s been a wild and magical ride, much love
Congrats!
Stock up on naps.
Congratulations! Now you can begin the transition to my other two favorite subs in Reddit: r/daddit and r/dadforaminute See you in the other side!
Does anyone else see the [face](https://imgur.com/gallery/UfUIAVX) in the first picture? I can’t unsee it
Haha I think walnut burl has a lot of sloth faces in it.
