We have her all to ourselves all day every day (my SO and I both work from home) except for these little playtimes of course. She comes home with focused homework for us to practice the rest of the week. When she graduates to the next class we will go with her to work on more advanced skills.

It’s $20 per 2hr session. Seems like a lot but I think it’s DEFINITELY worth it and I just skip the frivolous spending on other things for me for the sake of having a Shiba that’s well balanced for the next 15 years. I forgot to mention this also helps with her meeting other people and having them touch on her and they work on handling too (faux examinations) and she doesn’t mind me trimming her nails which is a MIRACLE.

There are many things to take into consideration and everyone should make their own determination. We paired with our breeder and veterinarian before making this choice. Even if you never had your dog meet another dog you could easily step in random poop on a walk somewhere and track it in on your shoe and they could contract Parvo. My vet shared with me that Parvo is not as deadly as some think and that as long as I am cautiously aware the risks of Parvo do not outweigh the risk of not socializing my Shiba during this crucial age. Again, this is a personal choice which we made under the advise of our breeder and veterinarian. In this day camp she is in a controlled environment with dogs that have all been vaccinated (as opposed to say a dog park where that can’t be verified.) Dogs that have colds or are otherwise unwell are not allowed and this is strictly enforced by both owners and trainers. We all work together to make it as safe as possible so our puppies can meet and learn how to be dogs in the safest environment possible both from disease and from poor socialization which can lead to fighting, biting etc. This is VERY different than taking a puppy to the dog park (notorious for bad behavior) or meeting random dogs on the street or on trails (which we do not allow.) Again, this is a determination we reached after much discussion and research, weighing the pros and cons of socialization while she and her fellow campers are going through their vaccination schedules.

I know they can be without proper and consistent training and socialization. We set strong boundaries from day one to be as proactive as possible to avoid naughty behavior before it starts and enforce only the good stuff. They are SUPER smart and very fastidious dogs (she cleans her face like a cat it’s the CUTEST thing omg.) She has not had a single accident either! She can be a bit stubborn but is highly motivated by treats (mmm dried mackerel and lamb liver) and she LOVES to fetch so we use that as a reward as well. We also reinforce eye contact for everything which we picked up on a Japanese Shiba Inu blog as a key to a respectful Shiba. If you have the time and energy to spend in the first year laying down firm house rules and socialization they make wonderful pets. It helps that Nola was also bred for temperament (her mom’s name is “Easy” which says a lot lol.)

It’s AWESOME! I cannot recommend highly enough. She not only has a ton of fun, she has learned so much in only a short amount of time. Nola knows her name, how to sit for just about everything, how to fetch and drop it and she is only 10 weeks old. This week we have been working on how to maintain focus on trainer/us when she wants to play instead. The trainers divvy up the puppies into small groups of 2-3 dogs based on energy/intensity and work with them on how to develop good doggy communication, how to take breaks from zoomies to work on training/focus and help us know any issues that can be worked on now before they get out of hand for example, separation anxiety, aggression, toy guarding etc. Luckily, our little pup has been getting all A’s in her classes lol and is a confident little puppy with great communication skills, she knows how to change roles (not always dominating) and how to take breaks when she gets tired. She plays with everyone, even the big boys and girls like Leila and her other friend Scooter (a rather big corgi mix.) We did our research and learned that Shiba’s can get weird if not socialized young so we knew how important it was to get her plenty of playtime with other puppies so she can grow up to have good manners with everyone she meets.

It’s a 2hr supervised (one trainer, 2-3 puppies of similar temperament) playtime so puppies can socialize and learn how to use proper doggie etiquette and communication with other dogs in a safe environment. They also learn the basics like their name, how to sit and make eye contact to establish a foundation for future training. It also allows the trainer to give the owner feedback about traits that their dog may need help with for example, fearfulness, separation anxiety, aggression etc.

It’s a great way to socialize safely esp during this young age. It’s only 2-3 puppies to one trainer so they work on all kinds of basics and we get homework for the week. Not only does she come home super happy and tuckered out but she is learning manners and proper play etiquette too. She even knows how to sit and does it before eating, walking, leaving to go outside and waiting for cars to go by. She likes the big doggies best, we think she thinks she is big too.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! All Very helpful info, thank you, it’s most appreciated! I am very eager to do everything in my power to ensure our Shiba is an exemplary example of the charms of the breed and not be the bad example that so many people seem so eager to warn me about lol! Won’t lie, there seems to be a lot of negativity about the breed in USA but having more experience with the breed abroad (where it is very popular) I am quite surprised by how many negative experiences with this breed there seem to be by many online. My experiences with friends’ Shiba’s have only been positive but it’s good to keep everything in perspective and know the dangers of improper socialization. We do not plan to let her off leash as I am very aware of their tendency to chase any little creature that strays across their path, we live in the woods so too many squirrels for off-leash adventures, but lots of trails to explore!

Thank you so much and be careful what you say hahah cuz I will totally hit you up with questions for sure! We already have her scheduled for puppy daycare (3 puppies of similar age to 1 trainer) for 2hr sessions 3x week so she will have lots of time with other dogs under a trainer’s supervision. In addition we have lots of well trained dogs (and children lol) in our neighborhood that she can meet when we take her for walks. I also plan to take her with me on all my outings for extra socializing opportunities. It seems, from my research, that socialization is the major component to a well balanced, friendly and confident Shiba so I am eager to start her off on the right foot..err paw.
