There’s one problem with this interpretation. In the Roman Empire anyone who was conquered by the Empire and granted citizenship was then a Roman. In the TES universe “Imperial” is still a racialized term. Other races are still viewed as “others” even if they are citizens. I’d argue the Empire in TES takes just as much influence from Early Modern Colonial Empires than it does from Ancient Rome.

The Imperials are just as racist, but in a paternalistic “White Mans burden” sort of way. They refuse to believe that the other provinces can survive on their own, and underlaying that is probably the idea that Imperials are superior to other races. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilizing_mission It’s the same hubris the Altmer suffer from, but just less pronounced.

When did PC players ever advocate genocide and slavery for Console players though? Meanwhile Orcs are treated like Gypsies, and the Thalmor have invented a new accordion track called “Remove Nord”

Because obviously an Indo-European language mostly unrelated to its neighbors just appears out of fucking nowhere. There no concrete evidence to suggest that they aren’t descended from Illyrians, and there aren’t any concrete alternative theories.

Well nobody actually knows what language Albanian evolved from, but Illyrian is probably the most likely option given that Albanian is an Indo-European isolate located in the southernmost area Illyrian was spoken. It’s not so much that linguists know that Albanian definitely did not evolve from Illyrian, but more that they can’t say because we know literally nothing about the extinct Illyrian language. But maybe Albanians are aliens or something, I dunno.

I’ve always had an interest in folk-type music in general rather than a specific genre like sea shanties. Sea shanties blew up in popularity because of a tiktok craze, and a couple of pirate video games (black flag, sea of thieves, etc)

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix the dictator of Rome? *Julius Caesar scoots closer to you, almost close enough to whisper in your ear, it is now impossible to focus on the show playing out on the stage of the Amphitheatre below* I thought not young Tribune. It's not a story the Optimates would tell you. It's a Populares legend. Lucius Sulla was a General and Statesman, so powerful and so wise he could use his influence to seize power... He had such a knowledge of politics that he could even convince the Senate to make him dictator. The dark side of the Roman virtues are a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was the precedent he established allowing someone else to become dictator, which eventually of course it did. Unfortunately, his actions taught a young man Julius Caesar, the son in law of one of his rivals everything he knew, simply by observation. Then after he tried to have the young man assassinated, Sulla conveniently and mysteriously died from liver failure. It’s ironic. He could seize power, but he could save neither the Republic, nor himself.

This was more a commentary about the Jedi always being shocked at the Sith returning despite it happening **dozens of times** historically, than it is knocking on the cinematic, which was epic. Like even when Qui Gon Jinn told the council about Maul, Windu basically didn’t believe him. Could we have missed a Sith Lord or two in the last war? Nope completely and totally inconceivable. If the Jedi and the Republic were smart they would have bombed Ruusan into glass after the thought bomb incident, and then done the same to Korriban (Morriband), Ziost, Malachor V, and Dromund Kaas just to make damn well sure this time.

Because it happened historically, when the Teutonic Knights controlled what later became the duchy of Prussia. Since I don’t remember the Northern Crusades being modeled in game I was wondering if I could replicate it. It’s rather boring to have a Holy Order that controlled substantial lands IRL to have nothing but barony level titles in game.

These people say they’d only believe in God if he’d reach out and make himself obvious to them, but in reality they’d just rationalize their way out of that experience in order to avoid having any morality imposed on their lives. That writing prompt is an extension of the reality that these people (Redditors) would categorically reject anything outside their narrow belief system no matter what the evidence was. The intelligent atheists I know would change their view if the Messiah returned, but not the average Redditor.

St. Nicholas, once the Bishop of Myra, furrowed his brow in frustration. The dumb fat “Santa Claus” from the decades old Coca-Cola commercials was still taking his spotlight. That was supposed to be a fad. It should have faded away by now. All those years he spent while he was still alive, proselytizing, giving to the poor, performing miracles, the months he spent imprisoned and tortured for his faith, that time he punched that heretic blasphemer Arius square on the jaw during the council of Nicaea? All for nothing. Very few people prayed to St. Nicholas anymore or remembered his deeds, and fewer still celebrated his feast day on December 6th. The patron saint of travelers, children, fishermen, and pawnbrokers was deep in thought. How many souls could be saved if they merely prayed to him, asked him to intercede to God on their behalf? Despite the eternal bliss of heaven, It was almost enough to feel useless, like he was fading. Nonsense. Would Consumerism and Greed really have more sway than Religion? No. Not forever. That was not something a man of faith like St. Nicholas could believe.

One thing I think is a particularly inaccurate trope with Hollywood pirates is Buried Treasure. Only William Kidd (and Blackbeard according to legend) actually buried treasure. After buying provisions and doing repairs to their ship, most pirates would probably spend the money they stole gambling and drinking when they came into port. They were literally just gangsters with boats and an absurdly low life expectancy.

I mean, to be fair a shit-ton of famous pirates and privateers (including Blackbeard and Sir Francis Drake) came from West Country, and rum was a popular beverage among sailors. So that one might be somewhat justified.

Aesthetically? Sure. But the Imperial Star Destroyer looks much more intimidating than the Harrower Class Dreadnought because it’s larger. Although this might be excused because dreadnoughts were the largest type of ship class when the Harrower was active. In an actual battle, I would probably bet money on the Star Destroyer on the basis that the heavier and more advanced firepower would negate the Harrowers similar number of fighters, similar crew compliment, and similar speed.

> In 1918 the Allied Control Commission insisted that the German troops remain to prevent the region from occupation by the Russian Red Army. The Red Army, led by the Latvian Riflemen, was making serious inroads into Estonia and Latvia. The Estonians offered tough resistance to the Red Army and refused to ask for, or accept, German Army support. Meanwhile, the Latvian People's Council (Tautas Padome) proclaimed Latvia's independence from Russia on November 18, 1918. Latvian leader Kārlis Ulmanis requested German Freikorps support for assistance against the Bolsheviks As for what happened to the soldiers afterword? They generally went in different directions. All of them were conservative German nationalists, but some of them decided to integrate into the new Baltic States, while some joined the Nazi Party, and others eventually became part of the German Resistance against Hitler.

Interwar period. They were veteran soldiers who simply hadn’t given up fighting, or started fighting again, by the time the red army attacked the Baltics in 1918. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freikorps_in_the_Baltic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltische_Landeswehr

Die Grenzwacht hielt im Osten https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NlqyBIQ-Cac Basically the song is about veteran soldiers (often Baltic Germans) of the old Kaiserreich in the newly independent Baltic States who died defending their homes against Red Army invaders or were forced to retreat to Germany, despite the war *technically* being over. While this was happening the Weimar government did nothing to help them and essentially abandoned them to their fate because of the Versailles Treaty. Obviously this bred a lot of resentment later on and is probably in part where the stabbed-in-the-back myth originated from.

A mistake a lot of people make is overestimating the strength of Panslavic separatism. It was popular among some intellectuals, but among the common people, Panslavist ideology was only really popular in Serbia and Russia. After he murdered Franz Ferdinand, Gavrillo Princip was nearly beaten to death by an angry mob of locals in Sarajevo. Czechoslovakia only left after numerous failures in the war, and most of the successor countries were established after or during the Empires dissolution. Bosnians were some of the most loyal soldiers, and even the 8th Bohemian Dragoons (58% Czech unit) fought for A-H through the entire war and only disbanded in 1918 when ordered by the new Czech government, and even then some didn’t comply.
